Commercial Description:
Lately it occurs to us that if, back in 1989, you planned on starting a brewery in the back of your carpentry shop, you’d have been wise to seek out someone like Harold "Trip" Hogue. A collector of ancient Volvos, Trip was well-qualified for the make-do engineering required to coax recalcitrant equipment out of retirement and onto making the first Boulevard beers.

The Tripel style originated in the Trappist brewery of Westmalle Abbey in pre-war Antwerp province. Its numeric moniker results from the old Belgian practice of naming beers based on the amount of malt used in the brew. A "Simple" was the lightest-bodied brew. Doubling the malt bill resulted in a "Dubbel", while a "Tripel" contained three times the amount of malt (and, as a result, three times the amount of alcohol.) True to style, our Long Strange Tripel is a golden ale with estery aromas, a dense, creamy head and a sweet finish.

Pours hazy orangish yellow with an off white head. Aroma is banana, clove, ripe fruits, yeast and peppery spice. Flavor is much the same with a little lemony grass thrown in.

750. Pours very hazy gold, thick white head. Nice aroma, spicy and fruity, some clove. Taste is nice as well. Fruity, lemons, banana, some spice as well, clove. Mouthfeel is like champagne, nice carbonation. Good stuff. I like.

Typical tripel....hazy gold pour with white head. Predominately fruity aroma/flavor with some hints of spice and yeast.

750 ml, batch T8088, courtesy of General Gao. Topaz, with a large spongy head that settles to a lasting disc and leaves delicate lacing all over the glass. Aroma is lemongrass, butterscotch, clove and rum. Flavors of banana-clove, rum, orange, and lemon. Resin and more alcohol on the dry finish. Medium body is too bubbly with carbonation at first, but later smooths out. Has some pleasant chest-warming.

Bottle. Honey yellow with a very thick 2” foamy lasting head. Nose-very Tripple, clean, hard to explain further than it smells like a Tripple should. Taste-bran, alcohol burn, high CO2, very very boozy, honey, sweet sweet sweet, apple juice, nutmeg, mace, cardamom, bitter finish. Good basic flavor, but in the end it is just too damn sweet.

Bottle: Poured a cloudy orangey/copper color ale with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of spicy yeast with some fruity ester and nice Belgian malt backbone. Taste is also a nice mix between some spicy and somewhat peppery yeast and some fruity ester with light peach notes while being very well supported by medium sweet Belgian malt. Full body with limited filtration and good carbonation while alcohol is not apparent. Very well done and probably one of my favorite US brewed tripel.

75cl bottle courtesy of dakid. Our first Boulevard beer. Pours a hazy copper color with a massive tannish-white head that settles slowly and heavily laces the glass. Aroma is sweet and malty with notes of spice, pine, caramel, honey, bread, yeast, and some grassy and hay notes. Flavor is sweet and malty with caramel, honey, bread, yeast, ripe fresh fruit, candy sugar and some spice notes. Generally medium body with a sweet and malty finish. Nice tripel style ale.
