Commercial Description:
Lately it occurs to us that if, back in 1989, you planned on starting a brewery in the back of your carpentry shop, you’d have been wise to seek out someone like Harold "Trip" Hogue. A collector of ancient Volvos, Trip was well-qualified for the make-do engineering required to coax recalcitrant equipment out of retirement and onto making the first Boulevard beers.

The Tripel style originated in the Trappist brewery of Westmalle Abbey in pre-war Antwerp province. Its numeric moniker results from the old Belgian practice of naming beers based on the amount of malt used in the brew. A "Simple" was the lightest-bodied brew. Doubling the malt bill resulted in a "Dubbel", while a "Tripel" contained three times the amount of malt (and, as a result, three times the amount of alcohol.) True to style, our Long Strange Tripel is a golden ale with estery aromas, a dense, creamy head and a sweet finish.

Thick white head with rich amber color. Belgian-style fruity, strong ale. Not too bitter, but full of flavor. Excellent beer!

A Mes rate: Bottle at weekend of tarts afterparty.
Hazy blonde with a good white head. Standard tripel with too much spice and little over done on the sugar. Thankfully not too yeasty as many Belgians of this style are. So so but no better. Score 6/3/7/3/14

Re rate. Bottle at Borefts 10am day after hotel tasting.
MUCH better this time, maybe I got the bottom of the bottle at the Horsetel. Excellent Belgian style beer. Very convincing and true to style. Dry and bitter with some superb yeasty notes. Lovely stuff.

My Bottom Line:
Floral hops, honeyed malts and bubblegum phenols discreetly chat until a herbal hop bitterness quietly moves in to seal this sleek and softspoken Tripel.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A frothy head of foam tops the hazy blond.
-The body is healthy and the carbonation ample; this is quite authentic a mouthfeel, and the same can be said of their other Belgian-style ales I’ve had.
-Alcohol is very well hidden, slightly warming.
-Even though this is very well brewed, I didn’t feel compelled to go back to this one at all, whereas their Saison was just brimming with life and so engaging.

Bottle.

Bottle@SpontaneousWeekend08. Nice and flavorful sweet tripel with loads of coriander. But the coriander is not annoying. Yet it’s still an average tripel and not really outstanding. Well balanced.

Bottle. Hazy golden coloured with a medium sized white ehad. Fruity aroma of spices and yeast with notes of citrus. Sweet and fruity flavour of yeast, citrus, spices and hops. Hoppy and spicy finish.

Hazy yellow color, very bubbly. Big foamy head. Flavor is yeasty estery bready and soft. Mildly flavored tripel, but very palatable. Soft around the edges. A bit of ripe fruit coming out toward the end. In a blind tasting, this could possibly pass for a true Belgian.

Caged corked 750 ml. bottle, mini-blurb and batch number (T8039), along with glassware and storage suggestions, on the back label, sampled in a tulip glass. Sediment is visible bottle. L: Given a careful pour, but some of the yeast sediment does escape the bottle, orangey copper in color with a pale beige head of fluffed cream, excellent head retention, light amounts of splotchy lace dots and chunks ring the glass. Overall, not a bad looking tripel. S: Woody, herbal aroma from the Styrian Golding hops, followed by the fruity smells of pears, mangoes and oranges. Further whiffs brings out the peppery medicinal alcohol and the bready malted wheat. Touches of white sugar and nutty pale malts as well. The more I take in the aroma, more the complexity of this tripel emerges, I have to say I’m impressed. F&T: Airy and moderate bodied, this has a nicely dry, creamily crisp feel to it, quite the easy sipper. A delectable blend of malts, sweetly nutty from the pale malts, coffee-ish from the Munich malts, and bread doughy from the malted wheat, this certainly fills the tripel malt bill. The malts are complement by the low grade warmth from the spicy clove and peppery alcohol and the dextrose sugars. Just past the middle a light fruitiness adds to the taste, apricots, pears and melons. Finishes aridly dry, sweet malty with a deliciously tingling herbal spiciness on the tongue, finishing one sip makes me want to greedily take another. I thought Long Strange Tripel was a well thought, finely crafted brew. Highly enjoyable sipper, this is an ale that I will be spending the rest of night with. If you see it, I, for one, would recommend picking up if you are a fan of scrumptious tasting Belgian style ales.

Pour is a bright orange with a soft white head. Aroma is everything a triple should be. Lots of banana and clove with some cream and yeast. Flavor is spice and banana with some pepper and yeast. Again this is everything a triple should be and the alcohol is not a problem. Very tasty, spot on and satisfying.
