Commercial Description:
Lately it occurs to us that if, back in 1989, you planned on starting a brewery in the back of your carpentry shop, you’d have been wise to seek out someone like Harold "Trip" Hogue. A collector of ancient Volvos, Trip was well-qualified for the make-do engineering required to coax recalcitrant equipment out of retirement and onto making the first Boulevard beers.

The Tripel style originated in the Trappist brewery of Westmalle Abbey in pre-war Antwerp province. Its numeric moniker results from the old Belgian practice of naming beers based on the amount of malt used in the brew. A "Simple" was the lightest-bodied brew. Doubling the malt bill resulted in a "Dubbel", while a "Tripel" contained three times the amount of malt (and, as a result, three times the amount of alcohol.) True to style, our Long Strange Tripel is a golden ale with estery aromas, a dense, creamy head and a sweet finish.

Bottle: Hazy golden pour with a white film of head. Honeyish graham cracker aroma- has some rotted pear esters as well. Fluffy body with a flavor similar to the aroma. Old sweet pears and honey notes. Definitely a typically sweet and under attenuated American Tripel.

750 ml bottle. One of the many flavors present here is banana. Many more unidentifiable flavors. Has a bitter, somewhat watery aftertaste. Though it tries hard to be as Belgian as possible, it doesn’t quite reach those heights.

750 bottle- FIRST DRINK- Nice belgian style beer, golden color, mellow flavor, you can hardly taste the alcohol at 9 percent. LAST DRINK- Very sweet, finishes well.

Being a Dead fan, the title caught my eye, and I had to try it. Orangish-amber pour with a nice heady foam. Sweet aroma, fruity, belgian malts, very nice. The flavor is sweet, spicy, fruity, a nice flavorful mouth experience.

750 mL bottle (batch number T8088) from South Bay Drugs ($6.99). Pours a hazy honey amber color. The three fingers of white foam quickly dissipate to a thin layer. Mostly sweet aroma of malts and especially fruit (banana, apple, pear) along with some yeastiness and light spice. Flavor is really everything that’s found in the nose, though not quite as sweet as the nose would indicate. Finish is on the dry side and has a small amount of bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and highly carbonated with a nice tingling on the tongue. Alcohol completely hidden; very drinkable.

Pours a fizzy, hazy gold, with a well-sustained head - inviting aroma of apricot, peach, wildflowers, honey, herbs, some light belgian yeast phenols - fairly creamy palate, especially considering the high carbonation - sweet, but not as much as most american-made tripels, and it is balanced by a strong herbal component that blasts through some initial fruity esters, leaving a semi-dry, spicy/peppery finish - some alcohol heat on the back, but just enough to create a warming sensation - some hop bitterness on the end compliments the floral character, and makes this tripel distinctly american - quite good.

Pours cloudy golden with a very impressive frothy white head that dies out relatively quickly leaving very little lacing. Aroma is yeasty with barnyard funk. Flavor is bready with plenty of spice and a sweet finish. Nice warming alcohol though you can’t really taste it. Very enjoyable Tripel. I’ll buy this one again and again...

750 into an abbey glass. I found this a little light, but clean and nice. Aroma is esters and sweet with head but warms to alcohol. Flavor is sweet esters with some bubblegum and a decent bitter kick with a touch of alcohol.
