Aroma is plums, candy sugar, figs, cloves and yeast. Flavor is complex with raisins, cloves, bananas, yeast, candy sugar, toffee and malt. Mouthfeel is carbonated and somewhat syrupy. Overall a nice representation of a quad. angrypirate06 (773), Texas, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 28, 2009 At Heather’s. Dirty copper color with firm head that turned to light lace. Grass and hay on the nose, with earthy sweetness following. Raisins and vanilly in the mouth, turning to an earthy sharpness. Alcohol. Lots of hay. Good, not fantastic. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 26, 2009 Pours an opaqe reddish-brown coler with a moderate white head with good lacing. Very viscous. Banana, yeast and molasses in the aroma. Flavor is wonderfully complex, with a variety of flavors taking their turns--banana, clove, raisin, caramel and cherry. Mouthfeel is thick and viscous without being heavy. Alcohol is definitely noticeable. While it may be outclassed by the Trappists, as American-made Belgian-style beers go, this is an excellent entry. waolsen (1222), Littleton, Colorado, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 21, 2009 Bottle: Poured a slightly hazy amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of candi sugar with some notes of peppery yeast with light dry fruit. Taste is also a mix between some candi sugar and peppery spicy yeast with some subtle notes of dry fruits. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Well made but lacking the candy and dry fruits component s that characterize that style of beer. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 21, 2009 Batch 68312: Rusty garnet. Tightly packed off-white foam. Very good retention. Banana bread, red licorice, brown sugar, black pepper, clove, floral hops, Juicy Fruit gum, and puttylike yeast line the aroma. Faintly plummy and raisiny with a subtle note of medicinal alcohol and chalk. Expansive carbonation gently pricks the palate before lapping the palate with a wave of creaminess. Initially airy and dry with a soft and clean malt cushion swirled with a bright flash of floral hops. Madeira-, plum-, and rum-laced sweetness surges forth to saturate the core, although it stops just shy of becoming cloyingly medicinal thanks to ample dryness which cleans things up a bit. Alcohol coarsely scratches the throat before warming the gullet, though it does give way to more-defined maltiness which is suggestive of bread and toffee-glazed nuts as well as a wheatlike tang. Sharp note of sulphur seems to amplify the presence of alcohol. Styrians leave their telltale juicy-floral thumbprint throughout. Body is fairly clean and nicely attenuated with the exception of some background baked apple flabbiness and green banana notes. Sweetly rummy finish is fused with gum and plums, though it’s reasonably balanced with black pepper and clove-like phenolics which augment the dryness and keep the medicinal sweetness and alcohol at bay. Really well-made beer, with merely a few flaws which include the baked apple and green banana esters. Would love to see Boulevard simplify the grain bill a bit by infusing it with some German Pils malt and a little less dark malt. Lowering the alcohol a point or two would also be welcome as it would better allow the subtleties to shine through. Enjoyable beer.
