Commercial Description:
"Do you know what dwells in a glass?" asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen's The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

Courtesy TheCheeseMan. The pour yields a hazy, burnt orange to sienna brown colored body. A wispy film and thin, bubbly edge leaves obtuse, foamy lace behind. Aromas are sweet and boozy up front, with notes of sugary caramel, rum soaked figs, and dark, sweet raisons. Vanilla lends a smoothing quality, while hints of earthy spice impart a savory character. Flavors continue the theme, caramel and dark, sweet fruits in the fore, followed by balancing earthy spice and mild hops in the aft. Sugary on the palate up front, the light carbonation leads into a semi-dry, alcoholic finish. This is a decent brew, but ultimately a bit too sugary and hot for my tastes.

Beer tasted at mcbackus tasting courtesy of the CheeseMan. Pours dirty brown orange with one inch tan head. The aroma is musty light colored fruitiness, spices and bacon earthiness. The taste starts and ends sweet with light colored dark fruitiness, coriander, other less discernable spices, yeasty spices and Belgian candi sugar. Really nice but could use a couple more years to mellow out the bright flavors.

Shared with MB at Woody’s. Pours a muddled orange with small supended particulate and large sustainable tan head. Aroma of sweet raisin, cane sugar, caramels, vanilla, and a hint of alcohol, though, the abv becomes more evident as it warms. Flavors of plum, sweet crystal malt, and I detect some oakey flavors, even though this isn’t oak aged. Fairly impressed.

What a satisfying beer! Really excellent complexity, with the alcohol set just at the right level to lift the yeast, sweetness, and spice across the palate. Rich color and a frothing pour, rich fruits in the finish. Very enjoyable; I wish I hadn’t shared the bottle four ways (albeit, I’m happy that it was shared with my wife, sister, and brother-in-law).

solarized chestnut with enigmatic large, lacy, billowy, wispy tan head. nose was seriously in your face with cobwebby yeast, melting bananas, clove, and rum. Flavors were yeasty and chocolaty like chocolate covered bananas. There’s a darker, wrinkly fruit flavor beneath as well...maybe a raisin, prune, fig type thing going on. Somewhat sweet but not overly so. Definitely big on flavor...
