Commercial Description:
"Do you know what dwells in a glass?" asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen's The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

Pretty darn yummy, an excellent take on the style. Toasty bread crumb maltiness, a bit of cookie sweetness, dark brown candi sugar, and a vigorous dose of dark fruits. Smooth on the palate with moderate carbonation that keeps the palate clean, and warming in the finish with just a light hint of heat from the alcohol. Welldone. This series continues to impress me.

Pours a deep cloudy amber with vigorous Champagne-like bubbles generating a thick orange off-white head. Sweet candy and old leather aroma. Burnt candy flavor along with a slightly bitter toffee taste, spices as well as a vinous character. An agreeable sourness is also present. Alcohol is evident in the taste and the warmth after the swallow. Different and busy.

750 ml bottle. Pours a fizzy, dark amber with a pretty big head and aromas of toffee/caramel malt, dark fruit and allspice. Flavor is sweet malt (caramel, toffee and candi sugar), fruit (figs and dates), spices (cloves, allspice and nutmeg?). A bit of alcohol is detectable as it warms on the way down. Another great offering from the Smokestack series.

Dark amber color with a long lasting tan head. Aroma of spices/pepper, caramel and molasses. Flavor is very spicey and peppery with caramel malts, toffee dark fruits and some alcohol.

I gave this beer the privilege of my first rating. An amber colored pour with nice lacy tan head. Smells of fruits and nuts with a slight spice undertone. Delicious balance in flavor with the aromas coming into the flavor and masking the rather strong alcohol content well. Slightly carbonated yet still smooth and thick, finishes well and leaves a slight burn of alcohol. An extremely good beer that has kept me coming back. My local boulevard favorite!

Bottle (750ml). Shared with blankboy, GregClow, jerc and tupalev, my bottle via trade with mreusch. Hazy ruby-amber pour with a frothy beige head. Dry, spicy aroma, quite peppery, with lush caramel malt and light perfume hop bittering; moderate alcohol in the nose, with apple and raisin sweetness coming in as it warms up. The taste character follows right along - perfumey bitterness, lush caramel malt, raisin and fruit sweetness, more alcohol on the tongue --- thick, only mildly carbonated mouthfeel, quite a bit of alcohol and dry bitterness in the long malty finish. Well done - maybe a tad boozy.

Murky brown with a nice light-brown head with excellent retention. Aroma is musty, full of dried, candied fruit notes such as plum, apricot and dates, caramelly malts and molasses. Alcohol aroma is prevalent, but not overwhelming. Moderately sweet, lightly astringent flavor, loads of cobwebby, dusty fruits, gingerbread, dried plum, and spices (nutmeg, a little cinnamon, allspice). Liquid fruitcake is a pretty good summation. Tingly, moderate-to-high carbonation, which I find perfect for the style. A fantastic beer, easily the best I’ve had in recent memory.

Bottle shared with tupalev, blankboy, HogTownHarry & jerc - HogTownHarry’s bottle. Batch #67334. Hazy orangish-red with a good sized slightly off-white head. Aroma is sweet and warm, quite malty, a bit candyish. Medium bodied. Nice flavour - sweet caramel, tingly spice, a bit of yeast, some alcohol warmth but not overpowering. A bit too sweet for everyday, but still pretty solid.
