Commercial Description:

No. 8 in the Boulevard Smokestack Series. "Double Witbier"

Conventional wisdom holds that there are two sides to every story. Though our new Two Jokers Double-Wit is hardly conventional, there are in fact two distinct pieces to its personality. On the one hand, it’s a revival of the classic Belgian “wit,” or “white” beer, a style dating back to the late 1800s. The use of lactic fermentation and ingredients like coriander and orange peel are hallmarks of the style, as are the cloudiness and the pale color that give the beer its name. On the other hand, it’s a modern, uniquely American specialty brew; big, flavorful, and spiced with cardamom, lavender, and grains of paradise. Two Jokers has a refreshing tartness, nicely balanced by a well rounded malt bill graced by notes of caramel. Belgian yeast brings floral aromas with hints of banana and clove, and a citrusy zing to the tongue. Two Jokers Double-Wit pairs well with the lighter fare of spring and summer, such as grilled fish or chicken, feta cheese, fresh garden salads, and fruit compotes. Look closely now: is it two jesters on the label, or a single beautiful glass of beer?

Pours a hazy gold-orange with a moderate white head. Mellow aroma of yeast and clove with light amounts of citrus and coriander behind that. Well rounded on the nose, but tame. Flavor has plenty of malt with some close and yeast. Finishes pretty clean with wheat and spice. Slightly full bodied. Quite enjoyable, even if you just want it to be a bit more brash.

Bottle, John’s Grocery, Iowa City. Hazy warm apricot, abundant open white head. Spicy tangerine, ginger and marmalade aroma, something minty around the edges. Plumy tart fruit, nice peppery spice flavors blend nicely with brisk carbonation. Alcohol present, but welcome, giving everything a nice heightened quality. Nice addition to the Smokestack Series.

750ml bottle $8.49. Vibrant, bright orange color. looks like a nectar, not much head when poured into a wine glass. Smells like citrus and tastes like biting into a powerful orange or nectarine, good stuff all around. This was the second American craft witbier I had today and they both deviated from the norm in a very good way. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 06-14-2009 00:06:33

750 ml bottle courtesy of Soonah. Thanks John. Batch 1-2009. Pours a cloudy yellow-amber color with a big fluffy white head that has great retention and lacing. The aroma is soft with the spices of coriander, cloves, peaches and yeast. The flavor is complex and slightly tart with lemon grass, filberts, spices, rock candy, apricot, orange peel and biscuit. The mouthfeel is full, smooth and malty. The finish is long with lingering tart spices. Overall: This is a great witbier. Very tasty.

Bottle shared at a BeerAdvocate tasting. Hazy orangish-yellow color with a white head. Aroma of yeast, orange peel, coriander, and other spices. Flavor is more of the same with yeast, orange/lemon, and spices. A little alcohol on the finish with a fairly full palate for a wit (not surprisingly).

Dark and cloudy burnt orange pour, off-white head fizzy, very thick for a wit, super spicy with corriander and orange, some cinnamon, finishes by exposing the alcohol a bit, does not finish water, which is rare for a wit, definitely a different take on double wits, but very enjoyable.
