| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 28, 2009 Corked and Caged 750ml my folks got for me at Goody Goody in Dallas. This was good but not as good as Iron Hill’s version of a Double Wit. Pours cloudy ornage with a nice big tan head. Nose is sweet and quite appealing. Taste is light sweeet and tasty, all in all pretty nice. nuplastikk (1255), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 25, 2009 750ml bottle. Thick orange-tan color, head fades out after a minute or two. Fresh herbal malt balanced aroma. Pleasant medium-low carbonation, nice mouthfeel. The taste is a touch on the Saison side, specifically of the non-subtle herb/spice-bomb variety. All stylistic negatives aside, this is still a very nice and enjoyable beer. Almost comes off tart and Bretty from the spice and yeast combo. Herby and citric with a smooth yeasty touch. A very nice beer, creamy and smooth on the palate. Butters (1654), Virginia, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 23, 2009 Sampled at the Noogfest High Five. Pours a nice golden hazy orange with decent offwhite head. Coriander, pepper, and a light wheatiness. Somewhat sweet with a good effervescence. Not as great as some of the smokestacks I’ve had, but a decent offering non the less. kramer (2527), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 21, 2009 25 oz bottle. Pours a slightly hazy orangish body with a foamy and frothy white head that retained for ever due to the vigorous carbonation. Nice spicy nose without being overkill. Perfumy hops, orange peel, light yeast, it almost has a bit of a brett note even. Spicy and yeasty flavor with a nice lingering floral hoppiness, the yeast is really fluffy and soft on the back end. The spices are well done throughout. Fairly light and airy on the palate with fizzy prickly carbonation. Pretty decent for a Double Wit. ditmier (1117), Boise, Idaho, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Nov 15, 2009 2009 Bottle - Thanks BgThang! - Pours a hazy pale yellow with a large off white head...aroma is spicy, mint?, lemon and banana, grain, worcester?...flavour is similar, too much shit going on here, orange and grapefruit tartness, lavender and clove, sweet doughy malt that even further complicates, definitely not a wit...I swear the bottom of the glass the shit tastes like ketchup somehow... too much, too much... | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 11/20 | Nov 14, 2009 Corked 750ml bottle and served in my Hoegaarden tumbler: Deep apple cider golden hue with a bouncy frothy white head and okay lacing upon the glassware. The aroma has a lots of coriander and orange zest vapours, wheat husks and biscuity malts, floral esters, hint of lemon and banana too. The taste is quite fruity and acidic but is also quite sweeter and almost cloying for the genre. I want my witbiers to be ultra refreshing and these "imperialized" wits (and weizens for that matter) are not what the doktor ordered. Lots of spice seems to run interference against the twangy fruits, muddled and lacks focus. The major redeeming value of the beer is the mouth feel which is lively and smooth before a bolt of alcohol cleanses the palate (which in this case is a good thing). While this beer at the end of day is hardly a drain pour, it simply does not meet my wants and needs for the style, period.
RANT ON: Stop it already, quit super sizing styles that simply do not take to doubling or tripling of the base ingredients. I do not care if your a world-class brewer like New Glarus or a local micro, you almost always will fail. Stick to doing a classic style well... if you can... but not doing "phoned in or paint-by-numbers" examples of the more common styles. We as a community need more WELL DONE, BEER GEEK WORTHY examples of olde skool but still complex witbiers, hefeweizens, pilsners, bitters, brown ales etc... I respect brewers who demonstrate the art of brewing by doing classic styles better than most of their peers... END RANT, Mike Skyview (4104), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 8, 2009 Picked up a single 750 ml bottle from Heritage Liquors in Maplewood, MN. Pours a hazy golden orange colored brew with a thick off-white head that has some nice retention and excellent lacing. Aroma of multi-grain and golden grain malt, coriander, orange peel, and a touch of spice. Taste is medium to full bodied, plenty of thick multi-grain malt, coriander and spiced oranges. Finish is quite smooth, a touch spicy in the background with a lingering malt and orange aftertaste.
