Commercial Description:

No. 8 in the Boulevard Smokestack Series. "Double Witbier"

Conventional wisdom holds that there are two sides to every story. Though our new Two Jokers Double-Wit is hardly conventional, there are in fact two distinct pieces to its personality. On the one hand, it’s a revival of the classic Belgian “wit,” or “white” beer, a style dating back to the late 1800s. The use of lactic fermentation and ingredients like coriander and orange peel are hallmarks of the style, as are the cloudiness and the pale color that give the beer its name. On the other hand, it’s a modern, uniquely American specialty brew; big, flavorful, and spiced with cardamom, lavender, and grains of paradise. Two Jokers has a refreshing tartness, nicely balanced by a well rounded malt bill graced by notes of caramel. Belgian yeast brings floral aromas with hints of banana and clove, and a citrusy zing to the tongue. Two Jokers Double-Wit pairs well with the lighter fare of spring and summer, such as grilled fish or chicken, feta cheese, fresh garden salads, and fruit compotes. Look closely now: is it two jesters on the label, or a single beautiful glass of beer?

75 cL bottle at RBSG2009. Pours hazy yellow with a small white head. Mild fruity and slight soapy aroma. Yeasty and fruity flavoured. Light phenolic too.

Bottle many thanks to Andy. Beautiful label, and nice-looking hazy bright gold pour, but this beer was just not for me. So much spice. Coriander and grains of paradise and other spices predominant on the nose. Couldn’t even really feel out any banana or yeast or citrus. Bummer.

750ml shared by durhambeer - thanks, Bob! The nose is immediately attractive, a very spicy followup to the NG Imp Saison we’d just shared. But the nose is the best thing about the beer, to me. Nice looking pour, with a robust body. But the spice and yeast sharpness dissipate quickly, leaving a slightly tart and not altogether satisfying brew.

Thanks durhambeer for sharing. Pours a bright gold with a one to two finger foamy white head. The nose is spicy, huge coriander presence, yeasty, orange rind, very pungent and spicy. Cloying with time. Flavor is spicy, lots of coriander, sweet, citrusy. Spicy palate with an orange peel bite. Gets tiresome, would stop at 4-6 oz.

Bottle shared at Noogfest High 5. Poured hazy orange yellow color with a medium frothy white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate yeasty sour citrus and herbs aroma. Medium body with a tingly smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy citrus sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate to long duration. My expectations where met with an above average beer for style.

Murky golden yellow with a medium white head, a bit darker than your average witbier. Aroma of coriander, orange peel, odd spice (I’ll guess lavender) and yeast. Most witbiers are just average and rather thin once you hit the taste department, but this double version came across quite nicely. Coriander, yeast, caramel malt, fruit, orange peel and spices are very evident and perhaps a little alcohol too. My first brew of the smokestack seriers comes across as a winner.

Corked bottle. Pours a light, dense and cloudy cheddar orange with a nose of coriander, bready orange peel, and a hint of banana. Flavor is a citrusy rush of orange followed immediately by bready coriander and lemon. Slight pineapple in the finish. Mouthfeel is too avereage to be appreciated. Not bad, but not the best I’ve had.

750 ml. bottle. Batch 1-2009. Pours a huge white over a golden (SRM 10) cloudy body.....nose of ginger, pineapple, banana, apple...taste initially is ginger, then pineapple, caramel, lemon, bit of clove at the very end, although it seems sweet because of the spices it finishes medium dry....mouth feel is medium as is carbonation. A very complex brew that has so many phenolics and added spices it is hard to get them all, and unfortunately comes dangerously close to becoming a soda.
