One of the better Belgian imports to reach Australian bottle-shop shelves in recent times. It’s no world beater but it’s streets ahead of most of the industrial muck that washes up here. This has a satisfying dryness that compensates for the residual sugars. It was pale straw in colour with a decent dollop of foam. The yeasty aroma seemed typically Belgian. Solid malts, bubblegum and candy sugar. Mouthfeel is too hard for the style. Spritzy and grabby. Sweet malts dominate before an acidic quenching finish. Quite dry, overall. Soft flavours. Warming finish. Potentially sessionable. Could imagine seeing off a few of these. (33cl bottle from Liquor on Parade, Kingsford.)

Cafè Cantante di Gavi bottiglietta da 33cl; che curiosità vedo che l’ha votata solo Joris Pattyn. Come mai?

Clear orange-gold, very carbonated to slightly irregular, dense off-white head. Sweet-milky nose, as from sugared thick milk; sweet-malty. Mainly sweet taste, lots of white candy sugar IMO, bit flowery, and a dried, old (oxydized) malt in the background. Palate is much drier, non-sweet woodruff-like; medium bodied, touch syrupy all the same. Sweet - John Martin’s answer to Brugse Tripel, IMO, and about as exciting.
