Deepest ruby. Terribly Christmassy. Weird thick banana nose. Loads of lovely roasted malts and a hint of charcoal in there too.

Real ale @ Olutkellari, Helsinki. Reddish-brown color, airy off-white head. Mild aroma with malts and some cellar tones. Sharp flavor with some chocolate and black patent malt, dry malty finish. Medium body, light carbonation. Somewhat unpleasant.

Bottle conditioned, 500ml, from Bellingers Garage, Grove, Oxon. Dark brown with ruby hue, malty head. An odd beer, it hasn’t the deep, roasty notes expected in such a dark beer, there is fruity sweetness with an unripe plum drying character, tea hops, a touch of Veno’s cough medicine in the close. It’s ok, but I didn’t warm to it.

Deep red, large head. Fruity spicy aroma, not particularly fig, though. Rich sticky body - bitter hoppiness in the finish. Bitterness is a little drying, and there is a hint of saccharin. A bit brown-aley, but alas did not actually quench my thirst due to the drying aspect.

Cask-conditioned at the Bag O’Nails, Bristol 18/7/07. A dark brown beer with a malty aroma with supporting liquorice. The flavour started sweet with some figs, before a strong liquorice flavour kicked in. Not bad as a novelty beer.

Pigs Ear. Buttery. Smooth dark, roasty soft stout-like beer with some rum notes. OK.

Cask gravity at Pig’s Ear. Deep brown colour with lasting beige head. Oh yes, fig’s on aroma. Fullish in mouth. Some toffee, some fig fruit. At least it does smell and taste of figs.

Cask conditioned - gravity dispense - Pigs Ear BF. A very dark brown coloured beer with a thickish off-white head. The aroma is quite odd. An obvious attempt at a Christmassy feel with spices, but there is a vinegar taint, which I don’t think is the conditioning. The taste also has some Christmas spices, predominantly cinnamon but that touch of acidity comes through again. Weird.
