Commercial Description:
Whirly Bird is our farewell to winter. Big and bold, even for an oatmeal stout, this ale is chewy and complex. A variety of oats, toasted at different levels make up a full ten percent of the malt bill. Add to that roasted barley, crystal malt, and chocolate malt for a well-rounded stout. This ale is a remake of an oatmeal stout served years ago at the tiny local pub in Lucan.

Up close to my favorite Brau Brothers with their Pale Ale. Aroma is distinctly bittersweet chocolate with touches of coffee and a hint of sour. On the tongue, sour stout hits your tip; the middle and sides are creamy, carbonated, and silky; and the finish is all roasty coffee, which continues to linger.

Black pour with a quickly diminishing tan colored head. Aroma is enticing. Chocolate, licorice, and vanilla. Very nice deep chocolate flavor, with some lactose and roast flavors complimenting. Really quite bold and flavorful. Not much oatmeal detected, yet still, this is good. Impressed.

One of the better products from Brau Brothers. Black. Roasted malt and grain aroma and more of the same in the flavor. Some chocolate. Fairly thick palate, which is probably its best quality.

Pours a dark dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee. Nice flavor, I think this is their best yet.

(bottle) Pours black with a tan head that fades away to nothing. Well, the first time I had this beer, I thought it smelled strongly of Frito Lay’s corn chips, but on my second tasting I smell a strong scent of chocolate and roasted malt. There’s also definite barley in there as well. Upon warming, the smell takes more of a Bell’s Java Stout turn, with a lot of roasted coffee on the nose. The taste is simple, but really good with roasted malts and a lot of chocolate taking up the majority of the flavor. The finish is just a very nice lingering taste of chocolate. Medium mouthfeel. Even though this is not a complex beer, it is well done, and probably one of the best offerings from Brau Brothers.

Bottle, Aroma of dark chocolate and mild coffee mixed with pipe tobacco. Decent lacing with quickly disappearing head. Brownish black color. Light acidic flavor with average duration. Medium to full body. Very interesting aroma and taste. Reminds me of my grandfathers pipe tobacco.

[Bottle] Pours dark brown with a tiny tan head. Aroma is deep roasted malt with a little alcohol and a hint of some banana estery sweetness showing up after letting it warm for awhile. Taste is also deep roasted malt with some chocolate combining nicely. Pretty good mouthfeel with a long finish. Probably the best Brau Brothers offering to date, even if the aroma is lacking a bit (I really had a hard time deciding between 6 and 7 with the aroma).

Black color with a thin head. Milky aroma and lots of oats. Chalky mouthfeel. Plenty of chocolate and oats. Almost bittersweet finish. Very nice.
