Commercial Description:
Whirly Bird is our farewell to winter. Big and bold, even for an oatmeal stout, this ale is chewy and complex. A variety of oats, toasted at different levels make up a full ten percent of the malt bill. Add to that roasted barley, crystal malt, and chocolate malt for a well-rounded stout. This ale is a remake of an oatmeal stout served years ago at the tiny local pub in Lucan.

Sour milk, roasted malt, and coffee aromas. Reddish brown with a thick head of good duration. Espresso and dark chocolate flavors with a dryish finish. Palate is mild.

Pours a dark brown-black with a thin tan head. Aroma is dark roast coffee and cocoa nibs. Flavour is nicely done. A little milky tasting, light burnt bitterness, some sweet chocolate.

Bottled. A very black bodied brew with a brown sugar colored head on top. The aroma is loaded with rich molasses and milk chocolate chips. There is some nice syrupy goodness here. The taste has some nice roast coffee along with bitter sweet chocolate. There is a lightly tart finish with dark plums. A decent brew that enjoyed until the finish after each drink.

This one had so much promise, esp. the thick, rather luxurious-looking head. But there was a deep disappointment, because amid the obvious roasted front and some of the best dimensions, I found I just really didn’t enjoy the sourness. I’ve had plenty of lactic stouts among the sweet stout category, but this one really rubbed my palate the wrong way, with a finish that left me clamoring for a glass of water. Good palate potential in the thickness, but ruined--to me--by the sourness. Bottle.
