Gusler (2656), Tucson, Arizona, USA Nov 20, 2007 The beer emerges from the 12-ounce bottle a luminous brown, the head large and a creamy light tan, as it fades away, the lacing provides a thin veil upon the glass. Nose has a rich malt sweetness, caramel and “ La Touche Finale”, a hint of floral spiciness. Start is nicely malted, sweet with a hop bite at the back, top is moderate in feel. Finish continues the malty sweetness, the acidity peaceful. As it warms to the glass and room, the hops really “POP” out, a bit of a “Rogue” as ESB’s go, but I like it.
Goodgrief (1013), Middletown, Delaware, USA Aug 16, 2008 Updated: Aug 17, 2008Surprisingly dark pour, amber with nice head and lacing. Mild, odd aroma...can’t put my finger on it. Rich sweet malty flavor, some bread and honey notes...not very ESB-like. Whatever, I liked it. Nice blend of maltiness and bittering hops with a pleasing alcohol presence. I would drink this baby again. Ungstrup (11031), Frederiksberg, Denmark Aug 7, 2008 Draft at the brewpub. A deep brown beer with a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of malt and caramel. The flavor is sweet and very nutty combined with a light note of alcohol, leading to a dry nutty and bitter finish. BlackDonald (1040), North Carolina, USA Aug 3, 2008 This is an excellent take on the style. I’m continually impressed with the small batch series. Deep amberish orange pour, nutty bread crumb aroma with some toffee and caramel, and just a hint of spicy, even earthy hoppiness. Pretty smooth with some honey sweetness on the palate. A great maltiness throughout. Finishes is dried fruits. Yummy blutt59 (624), Dallas, Texas, USA Jul 31, 2008 bottle, amber color, nose is malty and prunes, head leaves good lacing but dissipates to nothing, very nice flavors of toffee, chocloate and hops, finish is dry as advertised tennisjoel (716), Shakopee, Minnesota, USA Jul 30, 2008 Pour is red brown with a creamy average sized head. Aroma is more on the malty than hoppy side with some cherry, spice, caramel, with vegetal and grainy hops. Alcohol is noticed, which is not a good thing in this case. A touch cloying. Kind of unique and drinkable but not really all that great. The aroma was promising, but the flavor is kind of a mess.
