Commercial Description:
Hoppy? Brother, 471 redefines hoppy. 471 is a small batch, limited edition ale that was created by our Brewmaster to separate the weak from the strong. 471 is a double IPA, that combines Pale, Munich, Caramel-30, Carapils and Torrified Wheat malts, with Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe and Fuggles hops. It has a big sweet mouthfeel, followed by more hoppiness than you've ever had at one time. Enjoy. (Available at Breckenridge Pubs and Restaurants and bottled as 471 Small Batch Double Hopped IPA.)

Dark orange with a thin white head. Citrusy, piney nose. Flavor is big and grapefruity with some caramel malt behind it. Finish is tangy and fruity, fading into a dark citric burn. Not bad. Different.

Very strong on flavors. Tasted somewhat similar to an Imperial IPA. Very different from ones I’ve had before. I liked this served very chilled.

Bottle. Pours golden/orange with off white head. Aroma is hoppy with notes of citrus and pine. Flavor is bitter hops in the front with a sweet malty balance in the finish. Notes of citrus, pine, caramel, and toffee.

Updated rating: Location: 12 oz bottle from Norm’s, 7/27/09

Aroma: Citrus hops, pine, yeast, dough
Appearance: Hazy golden-orange color
Flavor: Similar to the nose, hoppy, sweet malt, tasty
Palate: Medium in body, nice mouthfeel
Overall Impression: I have an old rating of this from a trip to CO a few years back, I don’t remember much about this one though, so I’ll just have to input that rating for now, and re-rate if/when I try this one again. (3.8 Overall)
Updated rating: I’m barely even going to change my marks, but I guess I hadn’t remembered the nose correctly, because it was a touch better then I had remembered. Let’s boost the overall a touch too. Up to a 4.0.

I am always a bit skeptical about IPA’s. I haven’t ever particularly cared for them, and it wasn’t until drinking O’dell’s Extra Special Red that I like it at all. I’m working my way to being a hop-head but still a ways off. This beer pours beautifully, a rich orange/brown reminiscent of a crisp autumn afternoon, with a medium bodied, lasting head. The aroma hit me first of HOPS, and then the rich roasted grain came through leaving me anticipating the first sip. The hops hit me hard at first, overwhelming everything else with that bitterness, slowly transitioning into a subtle sweetness that disappeared and left me with a very crisp finish. Over all a fantastic beer, would be quite amazing with a great slice of pizza, heavy on olives, onions and sausage.

Tap. Moderate roasted and caramel for the malt, moderate to heavy pine and orange for the hops, moderate soap for the yeast, and notes of alcohol and date. Head is small, creamy, white, with excellent lacing and is fully lasting. Color is sparkling clear amber/orange. Flavor starts moderately sweet and acidic and finishes lightly sweet and acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is medium, oily and has a soft carbonation. It finishes moderately alcoholic. Bolder than I really expected, this is a perfectly balanced DIPA.
