emacgee (1859), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Nov 5, 2009 Pours a dark brown with ruby copper tones and a two finger moussey sandstone head. Nose is sweet and malty, caramel, some toasted bread, a bit rusty, some leafy hops. Flavor shows lots of munich malt (then I read the label and saw it had lots of munich malt!) toasted malt, mild grain, caramel, raisins, mild leafy hop flavor. palate is sweet with a mild lingering bitterness. mmmbeer (737), Austin, Texas, USA Nov 4, 2009 12 oz. bottle served in shaker- poured 10% transparent when held to a light source- near black with tints of dark maroon. Medium carbonation, half finger off tan head quickly dissolved. Aroma of a charred malt, dark caramel, and musk. Hits the mouth with a heavy medium body, malt is full and seeps into each pore, some very light and mild caramel, nuts, and hops in the middle, finish has some lingering to it. Not bad, but I thought that I had purchased an Marzen- but it’s not bad for what it is. DrinkEmUpJones (13), USA Nov 2, 2009 Medium aroma with molasas, coffee bean, vanilla, and caramel. Dark brown, almost black, in color with excellent lacing. Medium sweet, with light bitter and sour notes. Nicely balanced beer with a good mouthfeel. Seems sweeter from bottle than from an open glass. Prefer this beer directly from the bottle. Bhops (329), Dallas, Texas, USA Oct 31, 2009 pours amber, creamy head. Aroma of vanilla, malts. Not too remarkable, some nuttiness, roastiness. Block (363), West Lafayette, Indiana, USA Oct 30, 2009 Orange-brown pour with an off white head. Aroma consists of mostly caramel malts. Flavor is malty and slightly nutty. Lighter than I expected. 1010 (206), Marysville, Ohio, USA Oct 24, 2009 pours a deep orange color with a light head. Has a malty taste with a decent alcohol content. A nice change of pace for the normal seasonal. I appreciate the old ale instead of the normal octoberfest.
12 oz. bottle AmEricanbrew (1747), Louisiana, USA Oct 22, 2009 Mahogany color with a light tan head. Roasty chocolatety aromas with spicy hops. Medium body. Nice earthy sweet brown and chocolate malty flavors. Smooth finish. ChainGangGuy (2522), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Oct 19, 2009 16 ounce pint - $5.00 at Taco Mac in Kennesaw, Georgia.
Appearance: Served up a clearish, very dark brown body with an inch of light beige froth. Light, very light lacing throughout.
Smell: Aromatic tones of dark malts wrapped in notes of chicory and licorice root with a vague but obdurate fruitiness and background earthiness.
Taste: Dark malts lead with tastes of cocoa and a lightly roasty mix of coarse-ground chicory and licorice powder. Medium-low sweetness. Munich malt-derived caramel arrives somewhat late in the taste. Appleskin and grapeskin fruitiness -- curious! Earthy, mild hop character and bitterness. A bit more fruitiness, chocolate, and "chicorice" before the drying, longish finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied at best. Medium-light carbonation.
Drinkability: Good enough at best, for a beer, but never once did it make me think, "Oh! Now, there’s a taste of the Autumn!" There’s a taste of something, alright, but not a taste of Autumn.
