A good amount of roasted malt, but you can’t taste it. Not very velvety or thick. Say hello to mas production. What happened to the old recipe? Grandpa (325), Verona, New York, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Nov 7, 2006 It poured black and opaque with a tight bubbled, tan head. The head was not creamy, a characteristic of an oatmeal. The hops were strong and the roasted malt flavor was medium. It seemed harsh, almost astringent. It lacked the smoothness of a classic oatmeal.. No mouth coating. I was disapointed. sneagrams3 (1757), St. Louis, Missouri, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 6, 2006 12oz bottle. Pitch black with a tan spotty head. Coffee, toffee, grainy nose. Oily sweet chocolate aromas. Full bodied and rather lively. Coffee and cola prunes. Tart cherries. Rich and creamy smooth. Dry, but not overly. Good texture, smooth and creamy, to compliment the dry bitter hop finish. Personally, solid enough! EithCubes (2146), Indiana, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Nov 5, 2006 Bottle. Thick aroma of sweet malt, roast, coffee, dark chocolate, and lactose. Pitch pour with a creamy light brown head. Very roasty and pleasantly bitter taste, chocolate and lactose back off a bit. Mild lactic sweetness. Alternatingly watery/creamy mf, light body, bitter end and very dry aftertaste. Slightly ashy note which I actually like here. Not really that sweet for a SS. I appreciate this for its flavor, and wouldn’t pass up another, but this needs a lot more body. thehurt01 (205), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 2, 2006 It was like pouring cup of tar the color was so dark, it produced a small brownish head that disapated fast. The aroma is a heavy toasted malt. The taste is so freaking good that you need to get some. carbonation is high but it fits this beer just right. Smooth finish. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 27, 2006 Updated: Jan 17, 2007Bottle: Head died quickly, and the aroma was weak and bready. Poured a dark brown. Sweet initial taste, and at different points this stout had sweet and dark chocolate, metal, expresso, and bread notes. Medium body and sweet, mid length finish. Not a bad beer, terrable if some fool serves it too cold. SGTHibbert (100), Perry, Iowa, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 19, 2006 Very interesting nose. Alot going on here. Heavy notes of dark bread, grain and roasty molasses. Coffee too. Light scent of herbs. Some slight dough. Cask wood. Smokey bacon. Much like a rauchbier. Apperance was very dark, black with no head whatsoever. Flavor was bitter yet smooth with average duration. Full bodied with creamy texture and soft carbonation. Very interesting. Nice stout however inferior to Samuel Smiths. Good with desert or BBQ.
