Sourish malt aroma with notes of fruit, chocolate, and coffee. Bitter chocolate flavour and pretty creamy. Seemed a little bit thin at times but there’s still substantial coffee bitterness and sourish malt. Nice. DougShoemaker (2856), Toronto, Canada

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Jun 25, 2006 Had a 2 ounce glass of this draft as part of a 6 beer sampler at the brewery. Pours to an opaque dark brown, with thick tan head that lasted thru all the other tastings (this one was last), and excellent lacing. Aroma was a pleasant blend of oatmeal and malt. The flavor was a good mix of chocolate and toffee, all blended with the malty sweetness. Unfortunately, despite the excellent appearance, the body was fairly thin, which led to a slightly watery finish. This beer could have been better, after the initial start. btb01 (2), Arkansas, USA does not count | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 23, 2006 Updated: May 24, 2006Ok, I’m new to this rating thing, so I didn’t catch some of the subtle flavors that other raters described, but here’s what I thought: nice, black appearance (makes Guinness look light), with a thin, fading brown head. The aroma is not too strong, and is bittersweet. Has a nice bitter flavor to it, sort of resembling dark, black coffee, with a slight sweetness. FInishes a bit more bitter than it begins, sort of biting the back of your tongue, but still with a good taste. Very smooth palate; thick and creamy. Good overall stout, in my opinion. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 30, 2006 bottle. Pours black with some browns around the edges, tan head that fades. The aroma has detectable oats and sweet bready malts and small coffee bitterness. The oats are more noticeable in the flavor, though not as pronounced as in other examples of this style. Rather they blend well in the mix of coffee and subtle mocha. The first portion of the glass is absolutely great, but towards the end more off flavors come out like something that resembles burning newspapers. Sure, it is a little bitter but never gets overbearing in any direction.
