Color is a deep black with light carbonation and a thin tight head. Taste is smooth and sweet. Starting with medium body it goes down smooth and clean. Finish comes on with a sweet vanilla flavor and a mild roasted malt flavor, then is back by a some what dry bitterness. It is well balanced and the vanilla is not over powering. ilovedarkbeer (1367), Dallas, Texas, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 9, 2007 Tastes like vanilla extract. Pours the color of a stout and has somewhat of the same taste. The vanilla hints add a nice addition to the flavor but is somewhat lacking. good but not great. JFGrind (1354), Glenside, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 18, 2009 Sampled @ World Cafe Winterfest; Vanilla Porter was a nice break from Belgian and big beers sampled that day. More of a session beer, with vanilla standing out from roasted, chocolate, and coffee malts...but overall a well balanced porter. Lou18 (1353), West Paterson, New Jersey, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Apr 21, 2007 Big vanilla nose, brown body with tan headm quickly left. Nose is vanilla, almost a fakeness to it. Taste well... There is vanilla, and choclate, almost like a milk shake. Odd, not nearly as good as I thought it would be. Mystery 2.0 thanks to SHP555! | 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | May 1, 2006 Deep dark brown, almost black. Thin tan head. Appetizing chocolate cake aroma, with an emphasis on vanilla. Big vanilla flavor and quite sweet. Nice body but rather cloying. Quite saccharine in finish. If it was drier and the vanilla was toned down I would like it better. Nice looking 19th century elixir label. JMerritt (1321), Macomb, Illinois, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 5, 2006 Dark red-brown with a small light-brown head. Chocolate malt, vanilla, and slightly burnt marshmallow aroma. Moderately roasty flavor, not much in the way of vanilla sweetness - a fairly solid porter, though I would have liked a bit more vanilla punch in the flavor. | 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | May 8, 2008 Bottled. Pours a nice mahogany brown with some ruby highlights. Small tan film on top and not much lacing. Mild aroma of coffee, toasted malt and vanilla. Decent flavour, thin mouthfeel, maybe a little "chemically" tasting with the vanilla.
