Commercial Description:
Who would have thought deep in the jungles of Papua New Guinea and Madagascar grew the perfect ingredient to build an extraordinary Porter in Colorado? An ale that has all the chocolate and roasted nut flavor of a classic Porter, with an enigmatic surprise thrown in for good measure, real vanilla bean. Breckenridge Brewery’s Vanilla Porter. A vanilla kiss in a rich, dark sea.

Bottled. Pours a nice mahogany brown with some ruby highlights. Small tan film on top and not much lacing. Mild aroma of coffee, toasted malt and vanilla. Decent flavour, thin mouthfeel, maybe a little "chemically" tasting with the vanilla.

Poured a very dark brown with an off white head. Aroma was pretty bland, but i picked out some chocolate and vanilla, and roasted malts. Flavor was also pretty bland, nothing sticks out here, but no off flavors either, just so so average porter.

Get a little roasted and chocolate malt. Get a lot of vanilla. Looks like it should have a much bigger body but comes through a little thin and quick. Getting a bit of an offputting burned flavor. I guess I would call it astringent. Not a very enjoyable experience here.

Bottle poured black with small head and lacing. Light aroma of chocolate, malt, caramel. Flavor is a bit metalic with hints of roast, chocolate and maybe a little vanilla on the finish.
Not bad.

From a bottle. Beer pours a very dark, nearly opaque brown with a small, off-white, quickly and mostly diminishing frothy head. The aroma is full of dessert, maybe a little short on the beer part of the show ... Lightly malty with a note of roasted grain and caramel and bursting with miscellaneous notes of vanilla, chocolate syrup, root beer, and brown sugar. The flavor, on the other hand, is not so sweet. It starts off moderately sweet, moderately acidic and slighly unclean and salty. Gives away quickly to an average-length, moderately acidic, lightly bittersweet finish with a faint roasted note in the retronasal return. The body is medium, the texture is watery and the carbonation is soft. I didn’t care much for the subtleness of the "Porter" part of this "Vanilla Porter" in the aroma and the strange juxtaposition of the sweet aroma and the sour/salty flavor. Not horrible, by any means. Just a bit odd.

Sample at the Hopsnobbery Collective Porter tasting at Dogbricks on 12/4/08. Opaque medium brown color with a minimal head. Malty aroma with plenty of vanilla. I would have thought too much vanilla would be better than too little, but rethinking that now. Also, this is more of a brown ale than a porter. Kinda tastes like Vanilla Coke mixed with Newcastle.

Bottle from Dain’s in Durham. Deep brown pour, off white head. All the normal porter notes-- roasted malts, lactose, chocolate-- but with a shit ton of sweet vanilla. If you want a sweet beer, go for it. Not my thing. Glad my wife ordered it so I could taste it, but would not want more than a sip. Seems to accomplish what it’s going for, though.
