Commercial Description:
Who would have thought deep in the jungles of Papua New Guinea and Madagascar grew the perfect ingredient to build an extraordinary Porter in Colorado? An ale that has all the chocolate and roasted nut flavor of a classic Porter, with an enigmatic surprise thrown in for good measure, real vanilla bean. Breckenridge Brewery’s Vanilla Porter. A vanilla kiss in a rich, dark sea.

Pours almost black with a half inch tan head. Nose is rich with chocolate and some vanilla. Taste has all the qualities of a porter, roasty, some chocolate. The vanilla comes on the finish. As the beer warms, the vanilla becomes much more predominant. Nice beer that is quite drinkable.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. This porter poured a very dark brown color with light mahogany highlights showing through the edges of the glass. A thin, tan head quickly faded away, leaving some light lace. The aroma of the beer included roasted malts and some light vanilla notes. The flavor was full of vanilla, followed by light roasted notes and also some chocolate. The vanilla is very strong, but it doesn’t overpower the other flavors. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied with light carbonation. I really enjoyed this beer. About the only complaint I could find was that the body was a little bit thin. Very sessionable!!

Deep ruby pour with a thin head and negligible lacing. Nose is chocolate, mocha and a hint of vanilla. Vanilla makes its presence known at the first taste, then lets the chocolate, mocha and some coffee come through. Silky mouthfeel. Finish is bitter chocolate.

On tap at the Ale House in Grand Junction. Pours a dark brown with a small white head. The aroma is milky chocolates. The flavor is similarly dominated by milk chocolates and a light vanilla bean. Pretty nice and easy to drink.

Very pleasantly surprised by this offering from Breckenridge Brewery. Porter isn’t my 1st choice style, yet this has a very smooth and impressive character with an enjoyable vanilla aroma and taste. Minimal head and no lacing in the dimpled glass. The roasty, nutty, smoky flavor is more subtle, replaced with a nice dark chocolate presence. Nearly zero coffee essence, so that may be why I enjoy it more, as strong coffee or espresso aren’t my top beer flavor. Well done.

This was much better than the last time I had it. Bottle from Cortez, CO. Buttery mouthfeel and slight flavor of same. I have been drinking Polish Baltic Porters of late so the absence of copper in the palate is very welcome with this guy. Milk chocolate and vanilla round out - this would be boss if it had any coffee to it. Room temperature a must. Note to nbutler11: no, I didn’t inflate this rating just to put Breck’s average score well over 3.0.

Sampled at Lundeen’s Brew Ha-Ha 2009. Pours a clear brown with ruby highlights and has an average white head that sits atop it. Aroma is sweet with notes of molasses, chocolate, toasted malt, a light doughy-ness to it and a strong vanilla nose. Flavor has a very smooth sweetness composed of caramel, chocolate and an overall strong vanilla but is the perfect amount to compliment the sweetness present perfectly. A nice body and a very creamy feeling to it. Overall, generally it is very hard to do vanilla brews without overdoing the vanilla. This brew did a great job of preventing this and in turn, produced a fantastically memorable porter.
