Commercial Description:
Who would have thought deep in the jungles of Papua New Guinea and Madagascar grew the perfect ingredient to build an extraordinary Porter in Colorado? An ale that has all the chocolate and roasted nut flavor of a classic Porter, with an enigmatic surprise thrown in for good measure, real vanilla bean. Breckenridge Brewery’s Vanilla Porter. A vanilla kiss in a rich, dark sea.

Courtesy of Schwaiger. <!-- P --> Aroma is very slightly rancid smelling atop a sickly sweetness that might be vanilla, but I’m not staking my life on it. There is also a musty roastiness and some mild chocolate and coffee notes. Body is a fairly thick black and it holds a diminishing thumb thick mocha head. Fore is toasted vanilla and roasted malts that impart an acidic bitterness. Chocolate flavors meld with the vanilla to create a hazlenutty/pastry tasting concotion. It actually tastes pretty good if allowed to warm up to room temp, but the aroma is quite off putting. The palate is about right for the style, but barely.

deep cola colored brown body, soapy tan head that fades off very fast. nose is alot of malts, not nearly the vanilla i was expecting, but the flavor more than made up for it....sweet chocolate is complemented on an almost even level with huge amounts of vanilla. i cannot think of any other vanilla flavored beer that actually had this much vanilla in it. the sweetness isnt cloying and holds through the after taste very nicely. a thoroughly enjoyable beer

Pours a dark ruby brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is dark roast coffee and vanilla. Flavour continued with roast coffee and a burnt malt bitterness with a strong vanilla throughout. A little too sweet overall for extended drinking. Glad I got a single 12oz and not an entire 6 pack.

Pours with most no head but starts out brown and thins away and is very dark and almost opaque. Has an aroma of sweet roasted vanilla with nutmeg and caramel-coffee. Medium body of a roasted vanilla coffee beans and a caramel flavor with maybe a raison or plum flavor and has a creamy malt touch to it. It’s just a little lighter than a stout but not by much.

Bottle. Pours an opaque dark brown, with a thin tan head. Farly heavy malt aroma, with sweet vanilla aroma. Very heavy, almost syrupy. Sweet and malty, with a definite chocolate and vanilla flavors. Very smooth and rewarding. Too heavy for more than one though.

I hear this beer is available where I live (WI), but I had it for the first time during a recent visit to CO. I liked it so much the first time I had it, I brought some home. Pours dark with a rich tan head; looks like a porter should look. Smells nice, and you pick up the vanilla from the aroma. Mouthfeel is what definitely makes this beer. Sometimes when mouthfeel/palate seems like a totally inappropriate question for a beer - but this beer stands out on this dimension. Flavor is definitely vanilla, and upon multiple trials, maybe too much so. This is not the world’s best porter that the good folks at Breckenridge merely added vanilla to. Rather, the vanilla seems to really finish the base beer. Good, but after having a few times, I get how other reviewers have criticized the vanilla flavor as having a chemical taste.

Smells a lot sweeter than it actually tastes, such is vanilla. The aroma is dominated by vanilla with a hint of roasted malt. Good but not great.
