Commercial Description:
Who would have thought deep in the jungles of Papua New Guinea and Madagascar grew the perfect ingredient to build an extraordinary Porter in Colorado? An ale that has all the chocolate and roasted nut flavor of a classic Porter, with an enigmatic surprise thrown in for good measure, real vanilla bean. Breckenridge Brewery’s Vanilla Porter. A vanilla kiss in a rich, dark sea.

The 12 ounce bottle poured a clear, deep reddish brown beverage with a small fizzy head that did not last very long but left some lacing on the glass. The aroma was interesting to say the least. The major contributors were dark chocolate and roasted malt but there was a subtle contribution from the vanilla. The body was medium full with a soft carbonation and a somewhat smooth, creamy texture. The flavor starts off decidedly sweet with the vanilla presence obvious. A slightly bitter roasted grain character comes out in the middle and lasts through the medium-long finish. They did a nice job of not overdoing the vanilla thank goodness.

Draught at the brewpub. Clear dark brown coloured with a small off white head. Sweet and roasted aroma of chocolate and vanilla with notes of caramel. Roasted flavour of caramel, chocolate, vanilla and coffee. Sweet finish.

Pours dark black with reddish brown hues. Aroma of bread dough, toasted brown malt, and a hint of chocolate. Taste is brown malt, chocolate, and vanilla. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Not bad, but not impressed.

On tap at the Denver location, dark-brown color, with a thick tan-colored head, cookie dough nose, with some light spicy vanilla pod accents, some brown chocolate, coffee bean notes, with a mild sweet roasty aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a sweet toasted malt, vanilla pod character, with a mild roasted coffee bean, mochaish flavor, leading towards a mild roastiness, chocolatey espresso, bitter finish.

Crash and burn is the best way to describe this one. I LOVE Breckenridge’s Oatmeal Stout, and was really pumped for this one. Aroma is awesome; smells like a vanilla soda. Unfortunately, it kind of tastes like one as well. Image an A&W cream soda with alcohol in it. Same flavor, same stickiness, same carbonation. If that sounds like something you’d love, knock yourself out. As for me, if I want one of those, I’ll hit the soda machine.

The second Vanilla Porter I’ve had. Dark pour, sugary malt and vanilla aroma. Apparent subtlety wasn’t what they were going for when they added the vanilla beans. The vanilla just seemed to overwhelm the rest of the beer. Some chocolate and roasted nutty flavors in there as well like any porter will have, but just too strong on the vanilla for me.

Bottle. Small head on top of dark brown body. Moderate nose has aromas of burnt malts, chocolate, vanilla and plastic, a combination not all that enticing. The sweet vanilla is up front in the flavor, but there is also a moderate bitterness in the finish and an undertone of malts. Midly acidic. Medium body with watery texture.
