Suttree (2265), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Apr 28, 2008 Black, thin tan head. Vanilla fudgey aroma, as one might expect. Flavor is like an Oreo cookie in a glass - nice vanilla flavors mix with chocolatey malts. If anything, it verges on being a bit too sweet. Enjoyable, though. Sampled at the Flying Saucer, Raleigh.
goldbrew (82), USA Jul 16, 2008 Very pleasantly surprised by this offering from Breckenridge Brewery. Porter isn’t my 1st choice style, yet this has a very smooth and impressive character with an enjoyable vanilla aroma and taste. Minimal head and no lacing in the dimpled glass. The roasty, nutty, smoky flavor is more subtle, replaced with a nice dark chocolate presence. Nearly zero coffee essence, so that may be why I enjoy it more, as strong coffee or espresso aren’t my top beer flavor. Well done. Syd (722), Twin Cities Metro, Minnesota, USA Jul 7, 2008 Bottle pours dark brown with a small head and some lace. The aroma is sweet malt, coffee, and vanilla. The flavor is certainly highlighted by a lingering vanilla flavor, with a good dose of chocolate and coffee. The palate is a bit thin, but has a nice diminished carbonation making it more natural feeling. Overall, this is pretty good. CheersMate1 (276), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jul 5, 2008 This beer looks pretty good. Has a solid off-white head, with a good looking black color. The head doesn’t fade away fast, which is good. The flavor is not what I expected. Everything is very subtle. I smell the vanilla a lot, but I wish I could say that for the taste. The vanilla is not as crisp as I thought it would be. I was expecting more of an obvious vanilla flavor, but that is not the case. The vanilla and the malt/coffee flavor are very mild. The beer has a decent palate. This is a decent palate but the malts and the vanilla and the coffee, all seem very muted. In reading the description this beer leans more towards nutty for me than it does coffee. Decent brew. drjay44 (80), USA Jul 5, 2008 A cookie in a glass. Completely dominated by the vanilla flavors. Given the earlier praise from some tasters, is it possible they accidently spilt a few gallons of extract into this batch?? dmtroyer (304), Harrisonburg, Virginia, USA Jun 28, 2008 12oz. Pours boarding on black with a tan head. I can’t get over how much this smells and tastes like cross between a black cherry and cream soda. There was some black cherry in the nose as well as a few notions of roasted coffee. This was borderline offensive chilled, much more palatable as it warmed to room temperature. I still felt like the vanilla was more of an afterthought and was not well integrated with any sort of roasted malt that I think would have balanced out the vanilla.
