Commercial Description:
Black Pilsner is reminiscent of the classic pilsner-styled beers popular when strong-willed pioneers were settling the Canadian West. Its unique label with a blacksmith and forge hints at the handcrafted quality of this light-bodied, dark lager with its specialty malts and true Pilsner yeast

"Drinking this on tap at Original Joe’s, not a bad little micro brew tap selection they have here. Body appears black with ruby highlights when held up to light, there was no trace of any cap by the time the waitress dropped it off in front of me. Flavors are very subtle, roast malts, peat moss, mild coffee, and the faintest touch of a bitter hop presence. Mouth feel is acceptable and after taste is clean and somewhat refreshing. Beer finishes mildly sour but the becomes more evident when beer warms up. Very drinkable beer and of high quality, it’s just lacking any real character."

Although quite good, I don’t really see the point in this one. Looks, smells and tastes like a thin stout - hard to find the pilsner yeast. Nose of nuts, cocoa, leather. Honeycomb, roasting herbs, and coffee in the mouth. Finish is medium length.

On tap at Original Joe’s in Lethbridge AB. Black, slightly transparent, with a nice tan coloured head. Aroma is roasty with some lighter saaz hops showing through. Tastes very nice. Coffee and nuts with a tangy mid palate and a charcoal chocolate nut finish. Very drinkable and nice!

Dark brown color. Luckily despite the color the roasted malt character is very low. Unluckily it’s missing anything else. Not bad, but too simple Dunkel.

[825-20071105] Tap @ Amsterdam Rhino (Calgary, AB). Sweet dark grainy caramel aroma has a hint of floral. Clear, dark chesnut brown body with a long-lasting creamy off-white head. Grainy sweet caramel flavour. Medium body is a little thin but is nice. Maybe undercarbonated but overall a nice sweet grain balance.

Draft @ The Amsterdam Rhino in Calgary. Dark brown black body with a small tan head. (3+) Modest choco-mocha roast malt aroma. (6+) Mildly bitter roast flavour, feels a bit dilute in the flavour. Average palate.

Dark brown, modest head. Aromas of caramel, and light toast. Fairly light palate, a little nutty, mostly caramel and toast. Pretty thin, but decent enough.
