Commercial Description:
A stout, as black as the ace of spades. Brewboys has crafted a fine stout with rich, complex, dark roasted character. With abounding coffee-like aroma, and strong cocoa bean bouquet, the aromatics are as striking as the appearance. You can’t get any blacker. Roasted malted wheat, Choc chit malt, and black malt are all called upon to intensify the blackest beer we could possibly make. Recognised as champion stout brewers, both Stephen and Simon revelled in the challenge of outdoing their own efforts at perfecting the balance of roastedness, mouthfeel, aftertaste and alcohol, in this inimitable drop. Volatiles, including vanilla bean and herbaceous fermentative profile dissipate over the glassful, leaving the drinker with an earthy back palate. This stout is best described as an extra stout, not dry or sweet. It has a hefty mouth feel, well balanced with a moderate alcohol and bitterness leaving you wanting more. Aromas and flavours re more abundant when served at warmer temperatures. In the cold of winter, drink it straight from the cupboard or cellar temperature, but if you must chill it, no lower than 10°C. Cheers.

[330mL Bottle] Pours black with a tiny dark tan head. Aroma is a little raisin, dark chocolate, some plum, and notes of blackberry. Taste is roasted malt, coffee, a little anise, some sharp bitterness on the swallow, and some dark fruit notes. Medium-thin mouthfeel, finish is slightly dry and of average length. The roasted malt gets close to being too much, but compared to a lot stouts these days, it really is not out of control. When I first started drinking this, I had it pegged at around a 3.4, but the more I drank, the more I liked it. Another good BrewBoys beer.

Opaque and very dark brown. Small, tight tan head. Very nice coating all the way down the glass. Roasted malt, vanilla, chocolate aroma. Very singed taste, persistent but moderate bitterness. I don’t mind the level of roast malt, but I’d like hints of other flavours lurking behind it.

Liked it a lot. Well constructed stout, albeit a tad too much roast malt. Would like to see a little more crystal to balance it out. Nice bitterness, good head & lacing, good lingering flavour. In the depths of winter would I go another? Most likely, yes, but i’d probably rather an Imperial...

330ml bottle. Pours thick and syrupy and is a midnight black colour with a fine smattering of tiny bubbles skimming across the top. Burnt malt, coffee and dark chocolate aromas fill the nose. Lively in the mouth and zings across the tongue. Burnt flavours indicative of the style. Well brewed and tasty.

Would have picked this as an IS going off the pour alone; dark brown with a choc-orange head. Chcolate and roast on the nose althought with a tingly mineral note. More chocolate to taste however the palate structure is more astrigent than expected. Some dark cooking chocolate lurks as well. Not sweet, but not dry either. I’m not as enthusiastic as some of the other raters below.

Bottle. Pours nearly jet black with a short lived tan head. Nose is fairly light with aromas of roasted malt, bitter dark chocolate, a little mocha-like sweetness and a hint of caramel. Flavour has more roasted malt, milk chocolate and a hint of cherry. Creamy, smooth mouthfeel with a bit of fizzy carbonation, full bodied with some bitterness at the end, this is close to being an imperial and would have made a good one.

As black as the ace of spades, with a creamy tan head. Strong burnt aroma, lots of coffee and dark chocolate, a bit of roasted nuts and vegemite. Nice full body, quite balanced but perhaps a little on the roasty side. Flavours of coffee and burnt toast, long burnt finish. Maybe they should have eased off on the roast malt, but at least it’s interesting. Good stuff

Pours jet black with a wonderful chocolate mousse-like head showing great persistence. Aroma shows liquorice, dark chocolate, espresso, milk chocolate, roasted grains and light hops. Quite delightful. Flavours are dominated by roasted grains showing some coffee and nutty notes. Unfortunately there is not as much depth or variety as in the aroma. Finishes with an easy-going roasty bitterness. Good rich body, but could do with a bit more creamy carbonation.
