| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Sep 30, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Pours black with a large tan head with good retention and moderate lacing. Aroma is initially citrus (lemon, grapefruit), but some dark chocolate, sweet cream and toasted bread comes through as it warms along with a touch of alcohol and some sort of very subtle metallic lager characteristic. Flavor is fantastically smooth with a decent bitterness, citrus, some light coffee and dark chocolate. malt dominant, but a touch of dryness comes through in the finish. Velvety smooth palate with generous carbonation. kmweaver (2474), Sebastopol, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 30, 2009 12oz bottle, purchased at City Beer. Pours a very dense, chocolate-brown color; light tan head with solid retention and fine-bubbled lacing; a very attractive pour. Aroma shows solid amounts of charred malts and bitter chocolate; nicely toasty and definitely dry, with a hint of alcohol. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: lots of bitter chocolate and heavily roasted malts, following the aroma; crisp and bitter approach, but still lots of candy sugar underneath and highly bitter malt presence; quite lively and reasonably dry overall, especially for how much flavor is packed into this; the heavily roasted and bitter chocolate is the dominant note, and again there’s a shadow of alcohol on the periphery. A very dense, impressive lager. Lengthy, dry finish: bitter chocolate and heavily roasted / charred malts; quite lovely. beernovice39 (292), South Carolina, USA

I can only add what was going on in my head as I consumed and enjoyed and thought about the taste ....."this was $6"??? Don’t get me wrong it is worth it but the law of diminishing returns kicks in VERY FAST. corby112 (756), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 29, 2009 Pours pitch black and completely opaque except for the faintest of mahogany edges when held to a light source. Thick frothy 2 finger light tan head that slowly fades into a lasting cap which coats the glass with lacing.
Citrus hop aroma that is countered by a smokey roasted chocolate pilsner malt. There’s also a sweet spiciness going on with some licorice notes. Very unique blend of citrus hops and roasted malt with neither one outshining the other.
Full roasted malt body with a lot of dark chocolate, oatmeal, burnt toast and licorice. This beer is also extremely hop forward with a blast of bitter citrus hops that linger over the silky malt flavors lasting into a sweet yet very bitter bone dry finish. It’s very surprising that the hops are still very prominent even when blending with the very roasted thick silky chocolate maltiness. It’s like a perfect hybrid of the two styles. The alcohol is pretty well masked until the finish where there is a good bit of alcohol warmth. Very complex and unique where the experimentation works very well. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 29, 2009 Bottle. Black color with a rich creamy brown head. Chocolate, roasted malts, and coffee aromas with a rich malty, earthy, chocolate flavor. A long bitter chocolate finish. Gachupines (295), USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 28, 2009 Black with a tan head, aroma is licorice/chocolate with noticeable citrus hops. Flavor is very bittersweet with fairly strong hops in the finish. Leaves an almost sticky/resiny aftertaste on the palate. Overall, very well done and interesting, not what I’d expect from something with pilsner in the name. Cletus (5057), Connecticut, USA
