Commercial Description:
ADMIN NOTE: Brewdog have recently changed the recipe for this beer quite significantly. We are currently considering whether this change is sufficiently drastic to warrant a new listing. In the meantime could all raters ensure that they note which version they had in their rating to facilitate a split in due course, should that de deemed necessary. Whether you had the "new" or "old" version can be determined by reference to the batch number and the best before date. The newest batch is 037 and the BBD 03/09/10 (British dating) anything before this date or batch is the old version.

Filtered bottle and sometimes available as a special in the cask.
"Explicit Imperial Ale".
Ingredients: Barley, hops, yeast, water.

Bottle. BBD 02/02/10 so "old"(although batch number is 202) . Amber pour with almost cascading head, lasting white foam remains for a minute or two then totally disappears. Aroma is quite malty from a double IPA with a slight hop presence. Flavor follows unexpected aroma with mostly malt characteristics. Not a big fan.

Bottle. Really thin head but holds a white ring. Dark amber. Sour malt and alcohol aroma. No carbonation. More like a still BW. A trace on the syrupy side. Hoppy but tame. High alcohol. No life or pizzazz. Really makes you think about the meaning of life when a beer doesn’t measure up to expectations. Good thing that I have one Victory Hop Devil left1

From a cask at Pub Naples, Naples, Florida. Copper orange, thin white head. Nice smoky, bitter citrusy aroma. Very hoppy up front, with an earthy, smoky background. Clean hop bite, but a long aftertaste. Very tasty stuff.

Think this is old batch but date in the description is unclear. Strongly hopped nose with citrus and fresh grass. Pours medium-pale copper with a bathtub suds ring rather than a head. Flavour is potently hoppy with a slight citric sweetness (lemonadey) that quickly gives way to a long and intensely bitter finish reminiscent of one of those herbal italian digestifs such as Fenet Brahca. Very nice indeed, and if this is the old batch I will look forward to trying the new one.

Cask Handpump from the Main Hall at the Assembly Rooms, Derby Winter Ales Festival 05/01/2008 Malt and hop aromas. Small white head. Golden coloured strong in alcohol hoppy and slightly pale with some dryness in a crisp and bitter lasting malt finish.

Bottle. Pours IPA-amber with a green cast. Off-white thin head, poor lacing, little retention. Nose is a good mix of citrus and pine, balanced but unremarkable. Flavour is much like nose, quite sweet, with nice but unremarkable hop character. I think I would have scored this higher if it was a standard IPA rather than a double. I somehow expected more from this though it was by no means as bland and soapy as the Punk, nor was it as interesting as the Storm. Okay.

A pretty tasty aroma-citrusy and flowery. The flavor on this is quite dry, but a tasty dry and some citrus. Great finish. I believe this was the new version.

Bottle shared with friends, compared alongside the Punk IPA. The colour again is a fairly golden yellow with a thin white head. The aroma is quite citric as well, much more strongly hopped. Mouthfeel is medium in body. I taste more melon, grapefruit, avocado, a fair bit of hop bitterness.
