Commercial Description:
ADMIN NOTE: Brewdog have recently changed the recipe for this beer quite significantly. We are currently considering whether this change is sufficiently drastic to warrant a new listing. In the meantime could all raters ensure that they note which version they had in their rating to facilitate a split in due course, should that de deemed necessary. Whether you had the "new" or "old" version can be determined by reference to the batch number and the best before date. The newest batch is 037 and the BBD 03/09/10 (British dating) anything before this date or batch is the old version.

Filtered bottle and sometimes available as a special in the cask.
"Explicit Imperial Ale".
Ingredients: Barley, hops, yeast, water.

Bottled.. Best By 07/07/09...Pours a cloudy orange with a thin white ring head..Aroma is caramel and a little citrus as is the flavor but with really no hop presence besides a slight bitterness.. No carbonation.

Pours a golden yellow with a thin layer of foam and some lacing. Aroma is malty & floral. Tastes delightfully peppery, boozy and hoppy, but the hops are unexpectedly... savory? Northern brewer, is that you? Not really sure what to make of this one. Decent carb and thin body. Sheer bitterness makes up for the unpleasant-ish hop character, but I’m still not completely sold.

Bottle, Batch 207 02/02/10. Poured a hazy golden color with a tall white head. Aroma is toffee malt, caramel, wood and mild earthy hops. Medium mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Flavor is very sweet and malty, to me it lacks the strong hop presence required in an DIPA or an IPA for that matter. Lots of toffee and wood notes. Finishes with strong alcohol notes. Not great.

Clear golden color, dense tan head. Cheese scent, mostly "grønmøgelost". Hoppy and cheese taste. Long lasting bitterness and cheese aftertaste. Medium mouthfeel, high bitterness.

22 oz bottle -- Amber with a slight haziness, but no activity. The head is somewhat watery, yet stands. The aroma is kinda soapy, almost buttery. The flavor is thick with piney hoppiness, the mouthfeel a bit syrupy. Very drinkable, particularly for 9%. (#3601, 11 July 2009)

660ml brown bottle. Brassy/orangey/gold colour, really nice colouring. Head is comapct, creamy, light beige in colour, fades a bit too quickly. Fruit in the nose, soft citus character - light oranges. Hops are up front, orangey notes, some light malts, some sweetness. Finishes with grapefruit tones, mild alcohol is perceptable. Mid level bitteness. Has a medium smooth body, mild carbonation. Drinks like a lesser strength ale, enjoyable.
