Commercial Description:
ADMIN NOTE: Brewdog have recently changed the recipe for this beer quite significantly. We are currently considering whether this change is sufficiently drastic to warrant a new listing. In the meantime could all raters ensure that they note which version they had in their rating to facilitate a split in due course, should that de deemed necessary. Whether you had the "new" or "old" version can be determined by reference to the batch number and the best before date. The newest batch is 037 and the BBD 03/09/10 (British dating) anything before this date or batch is the old version.

Filtered bottle and sometimes available as a special in the cask.
"Explicit Imperial Ale".
Ingredients: Barley, hops, yeast, water.

Just had to delete previouus rating after drinking 2 pints of handpulled cask at the Rake C/O Tom. I had just tried a second batch mail ordered from the brewery after reading that the hoppage had been upped dramatically. It didn’t taste too different to me. I rolled up late at the Rake last night and was delighted to see this beer on handpull at a bargain £4 a pint. It was superb! I sank 2 in no time and would have had more if closing time had not iintervened. The best cask beer that I have sampled since Sheps/Stones California Double IPA last year. This is a F**king monster! Get down there and neck some if you possibly can. It is so much better than the bottled offering.

A Scottish 2IPA? Isn’t that a contradiction of terms? The smell is far more malty than most IPA’s; there is distinct alcohol warmth to it. The hop aroma is muted given the style--it’s present but subservient to the alcohol and dry malt. Okay, this is not a pucker-your-lips IPA. In fact, I would describe it as closer to a high-hopped barley wine. Again, bitterness seems secondary, with the malt and (light) alcohol showing through more. The aftertaste is bitter as one would expect from the style. This is a thick and rich beer, almost the consistency of cream. Not much of a head but it does leave some light, spotty lace. The color of the liquor is orange-gold and is very cloudy.

Batch 1, Best Before 03/03/2009. 22.4 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy gold with a moderate linen white head that lasted through two-thirds of the glass and left very nice lace webbing. Pleasant aroma of malt, pine and citrus, although none of these is particularly strong. The flavor is similar with moderate amounts of malt, pine and citrus. This is certainly a mellow DIPA in terms of aroma and flavor, but is enjoyable. A bit pricey though at $13.50 for a bottle, so I’m not all that likely to have another go at this one anytime soon.

Very sweet malty aroma. Clear red orange pour with a small white head and good lacing. Definitely a change from your usual IIPA. A little bitter, but the diecytal note (and butterscotch) is strong and to make it enjoyable. I was able to finish this, but I won’t be trying this again. Somewhat of a letdown.

22.4 oz bottle. B.B.Date 7/7/09. I think the batch is 002, but am thoroughly unsure. Pours a thin, but lasting head, with attractive lacing, over a pale yellow (SRM 5-10), slightly cloudy body....nose is light with a bit of spice, with light floral scents.....taste is light, early sweetish malts followed by light citrus, spices and mild pineapple tones with medium lingering bitter finish....mouth feel is also light to medium, carbonation is low. I don’t know English hops at all but are these EKG and Fuggles characteristics?? This is a thoroughly non US DIPA and is quite delicious.

Cloudy yellow with a small white head. Aroma is hoppy, citrus and grape. Flavour is light bitter hop (grape) and some cirtus and grass notes.

BBD 7/7/09 ::: smells like pineapple or pear, and maybe a little apple. has a very golden yellow color, and is noticeably fizzy and is somewhat cloudy.fairly hoppy in the mouth and surprisingly sweet. tastes fruity and clean, but has a pulpy mouthfeel (as though it was orange juice). Barely has any fizz to it, which was also surprising. Pretty good.

New version. Bottled. Blonde. Pineapple, grapefruit and oily and flowery hops in both aroma and flavor. Good mix of tropical fruit and hopbitterness. Just a bit alcoholic, but tasty and well balanced.
