Smell is odd and not really hoppy. Butterscotch, and diacetyl I think. Taste is bittered from the hops but not flavored much from them. Strange band-aid malt flavor. Dry, and interesting, but not particularly good. kempicus (350), Wellington, New Zealand

Off flavor of soggy cardboard is upfront but the decent amount of hops covers some of it. Not enough though. OStreetBrewery (100), Wellington, New Zealand
| 1.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 1/10 | 4/5 | 2/10 | 2/5 | 6/20 | Apr 26, 2008 Pours a light gold with a fluffy white head. Aroma features butterscotch and big solventy hot alcohol with hints of bubblegum and the slightest trace of resiny hop. On the palate there is a mouth coating alcoholic sensation, sweet cloying malt and a huge warming alcoholic finish that reminds me of shoting vodka. Dire beer. yalnikim (779), Wellington, New Zealand
| 1.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 7/20 | Apr 26, 2008 Tasted 25/04/2008. 330ml bottle from Rumble’s, Wellington. Pale gold with a tight white head. Diacetyl dominates the nose, with only the slightest hint of pine and alcohol behind. Diacetly again in the mouth, with a slightly harsh solvent-like acohol note and a strong, but somehow detached, bitterness. Looks ok but really hasn’t got anything else going for it. A shame, as I was looking forward to this. Enjoyit (1708), Vadum, Denmark

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 23, 2008 Bottle, thanks to jjpm74. Deep golden pour. Minimal white head. Pretty hazy. First whiff reminded more of a strong pilsner than an IPA, much less a double. The more I sat with it, it took on some almost Belgian (or to be more exact, American version of Belgian) notes with some definite yeasty characteristics and sweetness. Some citrus and hops definitely present on the nose, but not so much in a DIPA way... again, more like a hoppy American Belgian style. Thick palate. Sweet flavor, with some malty biscuit action happening a bit in the back of the palate. Started to seem more like an IPA the more I drank it, but I wouldn’t consider it typical of the style. Actually more like an IPA mixed with an American Belgian Golden. Maybe my palate was ruined by drinking Hopslam earlier in the evening. I do find myself liking it more the longer I drink it. I guess folks are looking for subtlety when they pick out a Double IPA, but I think it’s an asset to this beer. ratman197 (3189), Arvada, Colorado, USA
