Commercial Description:
ADMIN NOTE: Brewdog have recently changed the recipe for this beer quite significantly. We are currently considering whether this change is sufficiently drastic to warrant a new listing. In the meantime could all raters ensure that they note which version they had in their rating to facilitate a split in due course, should that de deemed necessary. Whether you had the "new" or "old" version can be determined by reference to the batch number and the best before date. The newest batch is 037 and the BBD 03/09/10 (British dating) anything before this date or batch is the old version. Newer batches will probably appear before we have this sorted out.

Filtered bottle and sometimes available as a special in the cask.
"Explicit Imperial Ale".
Ingredients: Barley, hops, yeast, water.

Just had to delete previouus rating after drinking 2 pints of handpulled cask at the Rake C/O Tom. I had just tried a second batch mail ordered from the brewery after reading that the hoppage had been upped dramatically. It didn’t taste too different to me. I rolled up late at the Rake last night and was delighted to see this beer on handpull at a bargain £4 a pint. It was superb! I sank 2 in no time and would have had more if closing time had not iintervened. The best cask beer that I have sampled since Sheps/Stones California Double IPA last year. This is a F**king monster! Get down there and neck some if you possibly can. It is so much better than the bottled offering.

Bottle. Golden color with a white head. Hoppy and very sweet aroma with notes of citrus, butter, diacetyl, toffee, grain and sweet fruits. Taste of hops, citrus, butter, toffee, almonds, alcohol, and sweet fruit. Too much diacetyl and sugary sweetness. Not very balanced.

I pray that this was a bad bottle, because it was absolutely unbearable. All it was was diacetyl, butterscotch, light caramel, and almost no sign of hops. Flavor was basically the same, with a light bitterness and faint hints of citrus fruit. I actually poured this out, and that is something I don’t do.

From the new 22.4 oz bottle. Best before 10/29/10. Purchased for 5.99, a lot cheaper than these use to be. Pretty good stuff actually, better than I expected it to be. very drinkable IIPA. Not too bitter and not too sweet. A solid bitterness lingers on the tongue though. A light piney and earthy flavor to this one. Pretty solid IIPA that I would drink again if i know its fresh.

22.4 oz bottle. B.B.Date 7/7/09. I think the batch is 002, but am thoroughly unsure. Pours a thin, but lasting head, with attractive lacing, over a pale yellow (SRM 5-10), slightly cloudy body....nose is light with a bit of spice, with light floral scents.....taste is light, early sweetish malts followed by light citrus, spices and mild pineapple tones with medium lingering bitter finish....mouth feel is also light to medium, carbonation is low. I don’t know English hops at all but are these EKG and Fuggles characteristics?? This is a thoroughly non US DIPA and is quite delicious.

Bottle Pours a hazy gold with a good froathy white head. The head lasts well and makes spotty lacing. Has a sweeter aroma than hoppy. Slight hops. Has a good carbonation. The flavor is decent. More hoppy than I would expect. Has a sweet hoppiness. The texture is resiny. Has a medium body. The finish is decent and a sweet hoppy aftertaste.

Tasting at Blacklick Wine and Spirits. I assume this is the "New" version. Pour was golden in color. Aroma was hoppy and piney. Flavor was grapefruit, brown sugar and wood.

On cask at the dupont circle Pizzeria Paradiso. Pours a clear light amber with a big, thick creamy head. Great retention. Leaves swathes of lacing. Aroma is cinnamon apples, spicy hops, apple cider vinegar. Taste is black pepper, English hops. Dry, bitter throughout. Unbalanced. It was fun to drink and had a lot of bite but misses the typical caramel and fruitiness for the style.
