Commercial Description:
ADMIN NOTE: Brewdog have recently changed the recipe for this beer quite significantly. We are currently considering whether this change is sufficiently drastic to warrant a new listing. In the meantime could all raters ensure that they note which version they had in their rating to facilitate a split in due course, should that de deemed necessary. Whether you had the "new" or "old" version can be determined by reference to the batch number and the best before date. The newest batch is 037 and the BBD 03/09/10 (British dating) anything before this date or batch is the old version. Newer batches will probably appear before we have this sorted out.

Filtered bottle and sometimes available as a special in the cask.
"Explicit Imperial Ale".
Ingredients: Barley, hops, yeast, water.

Bottle. Pours a amber orange colour with no head and not much carbonation. Real citrus aroma, the taste is like a very bitter citrus taste with a dry finish.

Think this is old batch but date in the description is unclear. Strongly hopped nose with citrus and fresh grass. Pours medium-pale copper with a bathtub suds ring rather than a head. Flavour is potently hoppy with a slight citric sweetness (lemonadey) that quickly gives way to a long and intensely bitter finish reminiscent of one of those herbal italian digestifs such as Fenet Brahca. Very nice indeed, and if this is the old batch I will look forward to trying the new one.

550ml brown bottle purchased at The Liquor Shoppe in Tygsboro, MA. Pours a bit hazy golden amber body with a half inch of off-white head that dissipates rather quickly. Grapefruit and toffee equally share the aroma, hinting at a good malt backbone for this DIPA. Orange, lemon, grapefruit hit the palate first, with toffee and chocolate malts shortly thereafter to help balance and bring some complexity to the show. Full-bodied with moderate carbonation. This is a very easy drinking DIPA and is disappearing much faster than I’d like. This beer is phenomenal - bold but balanced, complex yet approachable. I’m impressed.

Thanks to magic dave for this one. Pour is straw colored with a small white head. Aroma is earthy with grass, straw, sweet malt and a bit of hops. Flavor is malty up front with some hop bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied and nice.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a slightly hazy orange with a very thin, white head. Boozy fruit, citrus, and a touch of pine in the nose. Medium-low carbonation with a medium mouthfeel. Sweet boozy malt upfront, punishing hop bitterness on the back end. Honey, spruce, alcohol, and an aspirin like bitterness round out the palate. This one is just too over the top with bitterness and as a result, really isn’t sessionable. The bitterness is just too far out of balance. Long bitter finish.

Courtesy growler. Pours a pale, golden orange color with a small white head. The aroma shows citrus hops, some floral characters, and a lot of lemon zest to go with the toast, caramel malt backbone. The flavor is crisp with a lot of lemon flavor, spicy floral character, and a good amount of hop bitterness. Medium bodied with good carbonation and a long bitter finish. This is pretty good and an interesting take on the style, but not in the same league as the better IIPA’s that are around.

1st April 2008 Intense hoppy beer, bucketloads of hopspiness. Slightly oily palate. Grapefruit and other bitter fruits. Very bitter finish.
