Commercial Description:
ADMIN NOTE: Brewdog have recently changed the recipe for this beer quite significantly. We are currently considering whether this change is sufficiently drastic to warrant a new listing. In the meantime could all raters ensure that they note which version they had in their rating to facilitate a split in due course, should that de deemed necessary. Whether you had the "new" or "old" version can be determined by reference to the batch number and the best before date. The newest batch is 037 and the BBD 03/09/10 (British dating) anything before this date or batch is the old version. Newer batches will probably appear before we have this sorted out.

Filtered bottle and sometimes available as a special in the cask.
"Explicit Imperial Ale".
Ingredients: Barley, hops, yeast, water.

Wow, there’s a big RSD with this one, and I dare say it is way under-appreciated. Pours turbid canary gold with 2-finger white head. Nose is floral hops, rock sugary malt, mild honey, apricot, and yeasty funk. Tastes dry, floral, very hoppy, with a Belgian IPA feel to it. Tropical fruit and funky notes are also in the flavor, with the floral hops and rock sugar maintaining a good balance. It waters out a bit late, but that’s a minor beef.

Bottled. Slightly cloudy golden with a lasting white head. The unique aroma is nothing like IIPAs I know of. Peach, tea, grass, herb (sage?) apricot, orange, grain/pilsner malt. Flavour is rather sweet, dominated by grass, peach and grain, with a very bitter finish. Interesting, but far from perfect. In the end, it feels like a more bitter and stronger version of that awful English invention, the golden ale.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy dark yellow, unfiltered. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain, bread), moderately hoppy (flowers, herbs), with notes of alcohol, pear syrup. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately to heavily bitter. Medium to full body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Not much going on in the nose and very sweet, but the finishing bitterness cleans up the latter ok. Hard to drink much of it, but it’s certainly not unenjoyable. Overall not that impressed, even if not judged in the American DIPA mold.

Bottle from John’s Marketplace in Portland, OR. BB 07/07/09. Slightly hazy gold color with a frothy white head. Aromas of light stone fruit - fruity hops? Medium body with creamy carbonation. Flavor is fruity hop over mild malt. Quite bitter. Touches of citrus. Rather soft and mellow in texture. Gentile for the style. Delicious. Molto gentile to the palate.

Cloudy light gold body with a bright white head. The aroma has some nice fresh baked bread and hints of orange flowers. Very subtle in the hopping, especially as they want this to be considered a IIPA. The taste is bread crust and iced tea. There is also a little bit of orange peel, but it is subtle. I would consider this more of a big amber rather than an IIPA. Still, a decent and very drinkable beer.

Honey and caramel sweetness along with some citrus and a strong woody character in the aroma. Clear deep golden body is topped by a low white head that recedes to a partial cover with some nice lacing. Flavour offers a round malt sweetness with some floral and citrus hop notes. Moderate bitterness and woody aftertaste. Medium body is somewhat slick in texture with fair carbonation. Snifter. Cellar temperature. Bottle purchased at Brewery Creek in Jun-09.
