Commercial Description:
ADMIN NOTE: Brewdog have recently changed the recipe for this beer quite significantly. We are currently considering whether this change is sufficiently drastic to warrant a new listing. In the meantime could all raters ensure that they note which version they had in their rating to facilitate a split in due course, should that de deemed necessary. Whether you had the "new" or "old" version can be determined by reference to the batch number and the best before date. The newest batch is 037 and the BBD 03/09/10 (British dating) anything before this date or batch is the old version. Newer batches will probably appear before we have this sorted out.

Filtered bottle and sometimes available as a special in the cask.
"Explicit Imperial Ale".
Ingredients: Barley, hops, yeast, water.

33 cl bottle. No yeast at the bottom. Clear golden colour with a little head. Hoppy nose with hints of grapefruit, and citrus. Also flavour of grapefruit, citrus, peach and alcohol. Not a very amarican style IIPA, need a lot of caramel. But not bad anyway.

Bottle. It pours an orange-yellow body under a quite small off-white head. Malty on the nose, some beefstock, and a good dash of hops giving pinecone scents and some tropical fruits. Mostly hop driven flavor with pinecones, peach and other tropical fruits. Medium heavy malty background with sweetness and some beef-stock. Full-bodied and almost astringently bitter. Bitter finish. The beer has a fine hop profile, but lacks a bit on the maltyness. Imperial American Pale Ale more than Double IPA. Lovely though. (081031)

Thanks to El Gordo for this bottle--Poured a rich light amber-golden body with a decent whitish top. Floral, caramel nose with a sticky, fruity hoppy presence. Mild yet sharp bitterness . Nice balance of hops and malts. A little thin on the mouthfeel, but overall, quite good.

Batch - 297/287??? The label reads "297 (or 287 - I can’t make it out) 02/02/10 OK - this one found some brett in its yeast profile and has started going the way of the Superfunk. DO no dispair, however! It all works in this bitter IPA.Aroma is superb, with notes of horseblanket, bitter malt and bitter hop. Flavor is bitter, but not cloying. Dry, but bitter on finish. Interesting experiment. The name does fit, however, just like their Punk IPA fit that name. It’s brash, its in your face, its bitter and it has no malts to comfort you - so you either like hops or not.

Thanks to magic dave for this one. Pour is straw colored with a small white head. Aroma is earthy with grass, straw, sweet malt and a bit of hops. Flavor is malty up front with some hop bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied and nice.

Happy best before date...7-7-9 - old version. Pours hazy amber into a tulip. Soapy, sickly white head with no retention leaves spiders as it recedes to bubble surface. Orange and resin aromas. Thick creamy caramel upfront and thin pine and resin in the finish. Alcohol well hidden.
