Commercial Description:
ADMIN NOTE: Brewdog have recently changed the recipe for this beer quite significantly. We are currently considering whether this change is sufficiently drastic to warrant a new listing. In the meantime could all raters ensure that they note which version they had in their rating to facilitate a split in due course, should that de deemed necessary. Whether you had the "new" or "old" version can be determined by reference to the batch number and the best before date. The newest batch is 037 and the BBD 03/09/10 (British dating) anything before this date or batch is the old version. Newer batches will probably appear before we have this sorted out.

Filtered bottle and sometimes available as a special in the cask.
"Explicit Imperial Ale".
Ingredients: Barley, hops, yeast, water.

65 cl bottle, Fargo, ND, USA. Deep golden colour, Hoppy aroma, thick syrupy mouthfeel. Peppery, relatively smooth aftertaste. Very unnasuming for how strong it is.

Reviewed 8/31/2009 (Bottle): Pours a clear orange color body, small whitish head, diminishing. Malty sweet aroma, alcoholy, sweet and scotchy or something. Scotchy taste, some bitterness, strong malty taste. Better taste than it smells. Strong taste. A little dusty/musty.

Bottle from Bev’s for Less. Pours a lightly hazed medium golden color with a soapy white head that became non existent. Nose was very sweet and fruity. Flavor was sweet with very light bitterness.

Someone took the idea to "plant a tree, a bush or a shrub" too seriously in this bottle! Steve, DrBayern and The MadMax of beer CelticBrew poured a few down together. SPRUCE! Holy Treefarm, Batman. Nothing in the nose to suggest the logging operation getting ready for my mouth. Not much laace or head either. Flavor was SPRUCE with a touch of Lemon for spirit. Good, just unexpected!

Light golden in color with a light head. Smell is hops, citrus, and earthy. Taste is really hopy, bitter. A little bit like cleaning fluid. Ok but could be better.

Bottled. Pours dark golden/light amber with a medium sized off white head. The aroma is moderately sweet with more citrus than anything, maybe some grass as well. The flavor is more sweet than the nose. There is a big malt flavor up front along with peaches and citrus fruits. The finish is much more bitter than anything else. I didn’t like the way the flavors transitioned from one to another. If this wasn’t shared, I don’t know if I would have finished the bottle.

Cask@Derby Winter Beer Festival, 2008. Golden beer with a syrupy sweet aroma and a syrupy and quite bitter flavour. Overall an average beer.
