Commercial Description:
ADMIN NOTE: Brewdog have recently changed the recipe for this beer quite significantly. We are currently considering whether this change is sufficiently drastic to warrant a new listing. In the meantime could all raters ensure that they note which version they had in their rating to facilitate a split in due course, should that de deemed necessary. Whether you had the "new" or "old" version can be determined by reference to the batch number and the best before date. The newest batch is 037 and the BBD 03/09/10 (British dating) anything before this date or batch is the old version. Newer batches will probably appear before we have this sorted out.

Filtered bottle and sometimes available as a special in the cask.
"Explicit Imperial Ale".
Ingredients: Barley, hops, yeast, water.

Weak looking pour with a thin, somewhat wispy head of white bubbles. Lightly hazed light cider appearance. Some citric cedar scents. A touch of malt in the backdrop that reminds me of golden promise. Big citric start with a mix of pulp, pith and zest. Flavors of very light caramel and then a bit of cedar kick in. A bit lifeless and cloying in feel, but the zest help clean things up a touch. Some fruit, including pear and apricot in the middle. Finish has a light citric kick, in a key lime kind of way. I’m not catching the 9%. For me it lacks some depth and is much to citric in flavor without the bitterness to pull it out.

Appearance: hazy dark yellow, wispy white head, webs of lace,
Aroma: sweet fruity malt aroma with nice floral hops,
Flavor: sweet malt flavor, nice fruityness, lots of floral and earthy hops, touch of citrus, nice spicyness, sweet butterscotch balances the hops and gives it an English quality, light bitterness rises out of the hop flavor and leaves a long bitter finish,

Bottle purchased at Friendly Mini-Mart in Lakewood. Pour is a gentle, near-headless golden orange, with slight haziness. The aroma is rather sweet, and less from bitter notes. A slight hint of ginger is covered by a strong orange-ish scent. I’m not totally sold on the flavor and mouthfeel combo. The flavor is a little too grassy and rought, and the texture is just kind of chalky. Not horrible, but I don’t expect to reach for a second bottle anytime soon.

This is certainly not a DIPA like I like it to be: this is rather like a wine in palate, like a summer wheat in flavor, a pale lager in appearance, and finally like a barley wine in aroma... Hmm--meh for what it advertises to be, but otherwise, it is rather nice although it does not mask the alcohol well enough.

Bottle, thanks to Bu11zeye. Poured a hazy yellow with white head, ok retention. Aroma of of bubble gum, like Wrigleys Juicy Fruit, notes of bannana and pineapple....Flavor was similar to aroma, with sweet malt flavor and a hoppy bitter. Medium carbonation and a medium-full body......not bad though.

Bomber from Whole Foods (Tampa, FL). Pours a slightly hazy golden to amber color with thin white head that leaves slight lacing on the glass. Aroma is sweet and floral with notes of floral hops, citrus, grapefruit, light pine, spice, hints of malty caramel. Flavor is hoppy from the start with notes of grapefruit, pine, honey, light spice. Medium body with a bitter hop finish. Seems like it needs a stronger malt backbone.

bottle. poured golden, kind of light for an imperial ipa. Had a white head that clings slightly to the glass. Nice piney aroma. Nice hop kick in the initial flavor, sticks to your tongue, good IPA, but I wouldn’t call it Imperial.

Bottle. (new batch -- best before 02/02/10). Aroma is surprisingly malty, along with assertive hops and some citrus. Hazy orange body, small head. Flavor is nicely bitter, and more pine than citrus. Bitter finish. Not bad, but not especially great.
