Commercial Description:
ADMIN NOTE: Brewdog have recently changed the recipe for this beer quite significantly. We are currently considering whether this change is sufficiently drastic to warrant a new listing. In the meantime could all raters ensure that they note which version they had in their rating to facilitate a split in due course, should that de deemed necessary. Whether you had the "new" or "old" version can be determined by reference to the batch number and the best before date. The newest batch is 037 and the BBD 03/09/10 (British dating) anything before this date or batch is the old version. Newer batches will probably appear before we have this sorted out.

Filtered bottle and sometimes available as a special in the cask.
"Explicit Imperial Ale".
Ingredients: Barley, hops, yeast, water.

Bottle from John’s Marketplace in Portland, OR. BB 07/07/09. Slightly hazy gold color with a frothy white head. Aromas of light stone fruit - fruity hops? Medium body with creamy carbonation. Flavor is fruity hop over mild malt. Quite bitter. Touches of citrus. Rather soft and mellow in texture. Gentile for the style. Delicious. Molto gentile to the palate.

Bottle, from Sainsburys, Hessle- batch 195 bbe 15/07/10. Deep gold, thin but lasting white head and gentle condition. Big hop resin nose but not quite as raw as with the Chaos Theory, some solid malty sweetness in the background along with bready notes and a fruity spirit kick. Full and sweet in the mouth with hints of toffee, citrus and peach, theres plenty of hop bitterness attempting a balance but as with the Chaos it appears, erm, somewhat chaotic at times, finish is alcoholic, full and sweet with a solid hop resin note but muted bitterness , and ulitimately quite sticky.

From a cask at Pub Naples, Naples, Florida. Copper orange, thin white head. Nice smoky, bitter citrusy aroma. Very hoppy up front, with an earthy, smoky background. Clean hop bite, but a long aftertaste. Very tasty stuff.

Bottled. Golden coloured. Unclear. Fluffy off white head. Sweetness, fruits, pine, flowers and spice in the aroma. Flavour is very herbal and piney. Has loads of spice, a tad of alcohol and some notable sweetness. Quite balanced. Medium to full bodied. Is medium to heavy bitter in the end, but a touch of sweetness balance this. Very nice.

Bottled. A copper coloured beer with a tiny off white head. The aroma has big sticky hops and a bit of glue. The taste is the same with loads of hops. Notes of grapes. Decent but a bit chewy and a little unbalanced Score 3.5
Subsequent rating scored 3.8, 3.8, 3.8 and 4.3. Average becomes 3.8

Wow, there’s a big RSD with this one, and I dare say it is way under-appreciated. Pours turbid canary gold with 2-finger white head. Nose is floral hops, rock sugary malt, mild honey, apricot, and yeasty funk. Tastes dry, floral, very hoppy, with a Belgian IPA feel to it. Tropical fruit and funky notes are also in the flavor, with the floral hops and rock sugar maintaining a good balance. It waters out a bit late, but that’s a minor beef.

Bottle. Pours a hazy yellow with a small white head. Small lacing. Sweet candy hop aroma. Citrus and faint notes of yeast and wood appear as it warms. Round, strong flavour. Lots of hops. Remotely grainy, but not bad. You can feel the alcohol, but remarkably well-balanced considering the high percentage. Finish is all hops baby. Long, strong bitterness. Slightly oily palate. 30-04-08.
