Commercial Description:
ADMIN NOTE: Brewdog have recently changed the recipe for this beer quite significantly. We are currently considering whether this change is sufficiently drastic to warrant a new listing. In the meantime could all raters ensure that they note which version they had in their rating to facilitate a split in due course, should that de deemed necessary. Whether you had the "new" or "old" version can be determined by reference to the batch number and the best before date. The newest batch is 037 and the BBD 03/09/10 (British dating) anything before this date or batch is the old version. Newer batches will probably appear before we have this sorted out.

Filtered bottle and sometimes available as a special in the cask.
"Explicit Imperial Ale".

660ml brown bottle. Brassy/orangey/gold colour, really nice colouring. Head is comapct, creamy, light beige in colour, fades a bit too quickly. Fruit in the nose, soft citus character - light oranges. Hops are up front, orangey notes, some light malts, some sweetness. Finishes with grapefruit tones, mild alcohol is perceptable. Mid level bitteness. Has a medium smooth body, mild carbonation. Drinks like a lesser strength ale, enjoyable.

From the 750ml bottle this pours a clear yellow/gold body with much bubbling and a substantial, creamy head. The aroma has buttery sweetmalts, a touch of orchard fruit, and hop scents of flowers, grapefruit, pine, and earth. The hoppy bitterness dominates the flavor, which is dandy for this hop-head, the malty sweetness just strong enough to support it. More pine and citrus zest in the flavor. It finishes on a dry bitter note, quited prolonged and satisfying. Very nice.

Golden, slightly hazy with a medium and creamy head. The aroma has nice fruity, citrussy hoppy notes with hints of spruce. The flavour is nice and fruity with notes of citrus, pine needle, loads of caramel and a light sweetness. The finish has bitterness, citrus, pine and towards the end it’s quite dry too. It’s not as bitter as many of the US specimens, but very tasty anyhow.

Hints of pine with tropical fruits, papya, fresh pomegranates on the nose. Pours a very light golden blonde. Piney, resiny hop flavors with caramel malts with some bread, very strong bitterness. Excellent!

Date: 08/02/08, bomber courtesy of CelticBrew, shared with him, Doboy, and Steve E.

Aroma - Very piney hops start off, some woody and grassy aromas follow, with some citrus fruit as well

Appearance - Clear yellow gold pour, fleeting, foamy, white head.

Flavor - Pleasing caramel and toffee flavors combine with some fruitiness to bring out the sweetness. A soft, gentle bitterness rouonds things out. Nice balance.

Palate - Medium body, light carbonation, pleasingly dry in a medium/long finish.

Overall - A unique character compared to its American counterparts, but smooth, pleasing, and drinkable. Seems underappreciated to me.
