nearbeer (1833), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Oct 26, 2008 Updated: Jan 15, 200912 oz, bb12/12/09. Opaque black with a small but lasting head resulting from second try at a hard pour. Leaves some crunchy swiss-cheese lacing behind. Aromas of coffee, cocoa, vanilla, caramel and light apple. Flavor is the same, with some touches of whiskey, smoke and peppery oak. Medium-heavy body is watery, very lightly carbonated, and roasty-dry. Good, but this whole barrel-aged series would be improved with the use of a bigger, maltier Impy stout recipe. 0110x011 (20), Dana Point, California, USA Oct 25, 2008 Pours a near-black dark brown, with nearly zero head. Nose is fantastic, with scotch, smoke, leather, dark fruit, and port wine. The palate is pretty underwhelming, with smoke, char, and scotch. mouthfeel is even more underwhelming. Possibly the thinnest RIS I’ve ever had, and little carbonation to speak of. Watery, with a light alcohol burn.
There’s an amazing nose on this, but that’s where the greatness ends. This is a $12 mistake you don’t want to make. bierkoning (5987), La Tropica, Netherlands Oct 20, 2008 Bottle from Lithy, thanks! Deep dark brown color. Dark chocolate, dried fruit and a hint of oak in the aroma. Malty sweet, oaky flavor with just a hint of smoke and dark chocolate. Alcoholic, dried fruit. The malt whisky character is there, but I prefer it a bit more peated. mar (1740), Rowlett, Texas, USA Oct 19, 2008 bottle thanks to bu11zeye. black pour with a tiny bit of froth up top. very sweet vanilla and oak scents. the oak is much more pronounced in this one compared to the 005. the roastiness of the stout comes through with a smokey finish. BMan1113VR (2755), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA Oct 19, 2008 Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours a thick black with no head at all. Somewhat weak aroma of chocolate, whisky, cedar and dry coffee. Taste is chocolate and a bit of coffee and peet. Not very bold. Syrupy mouthfeel verey light carbonation. Suttree (2702), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Oct 19, 2008 Know what I like about this? Unlike a lot of barrell aged beers, this doesn’t scream whiskey (or whisky, as the case may be). The scotch flavors blend nicely with the beer, adding a depth of flavor and not overpowering the beer. Very smooth, with subtle fruity notes combining with the earthy, woodsy notesHint of peat and sea air, too. Very tasty. BB12/12/09,batch 003 kegbear (265), Orange, California, USA Oct 17, 2008 Bottle. Pours a dark dark brown. Aroma of roasted malt and bourbon. Tastes of coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla and bourbon. Nice! beerinmarch (2781), Alabama, USA Oct 15, 2008 From the bottle pours dark ebony with a smooth tan head. Earthy nose of oak and soft smoke. Not near the scotchiness of the Islay, but much subtler peat and smoke to compliment the chocolate, toffee, and oat notes. The difference between each of these beers has been great to try.
