JK (2943), Richfield, Minnesota, USA Feb 1, 2009 The palate is a hair thinner than the Speyside. There is more oak in th flaovr and aroma, with lightly sweet fruit and yeast. Almost no scotch, and I don’t think Macallan spends much time in the sherry cask anyway. Suttree (2701), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jan 18, 2009 black, no head. Coffee, smoky, earthy aroma. Very earthy flavor, but it mixes well with the stout flavors. Nicely balanced, and the macallan never overpowers the beer. Very tasty. WeeHeavySD (2932), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Jan 17, 2009 12oz via trade with 1brew2or3. Poured into a snifter. Pours black with a tan head. Nose is sweet malty and rich with a nice kick of chocolate. Taste is sweet chocolatey and malty. Some sweet sherry does come through. Pretty nice paradox from brewdog. nearbeer (1833), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jan 15, 2009 330 ml, bb 12/12/09. Hard pour yields a small head that tries to cling to the rim of the glass. Aroma is vanilla, caramel, raisin, oak, light cherry and char. Well-blended flavors of caramel, chocolate raisin, vanilla, coffee, whiskey, sweet cherry and oak. Finish has some light char, salt and soy that provide a nice drying balance. The small head manages to leave some beautiful lacing all over the glass. Medium-heavy body is smooth and lightly sticky. Best of the five in the paradox series I’ve sampled to date. scoth (266), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Jan 15, 2009 Pours dark brown, black in the glass, with a medium tan head, some lacing. Smells strongly of scotch, oak and alcohol, with some peat, coffee, and pear undertones. Medium-thick velvety body. In the taste, imperial stout characteristics come through more strongly, complimented by scotch notes. There’s big malt flavors up front; molasses, dark chocolate, plum, and coffee, with some oak. Has a slightly dry, mineral edge, and a medium bitter finish. Nicely balanced. A wonderful imperial stout. 17thfloor (1402), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 14, 2009 Served at room temp as per bottle. Pours a thinner (for an IS) fairly dark brown, almost light enough to see-thru, with a minimal fizzy beige froth that dissipates quickly. Strong barrel aroma, woody chocolate, smokey peat, smells dry, quite malty, the aroma changes into something much more English, maybe a touch of diacetyl, toasty, a bit of fruit or maybe thats the sherry. First taste is not very Imperial Stoutish, definitely more of a BA Scottish Ale. Flavors of peated malt, lightly burnt malts, lots of toasted malts, some buttery diacetyl, some chocolate, every so lightly grassy. A bit sugary tasting while being dry with a decent amount of bitterness. The sherry cask really makes itself apparent in the aftertaste. Medium body, smooth and flat, oily. The finish and aftertaste really make this beer, otherwise it would be a complete disappointment. Definitely a sipper... this is one beer where its okay to breath lots and release the alcohol. travita (1851), Frisco, Texas, USA Dec 29, 2008 Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Smell is vanilla, smoke, dried fruit, whiskey. Pretty decent. Look is dark brown and clear with not very much head. Taste is malts, smoke, dried fruits, whiskey, malts, pretty good flavor. daknole (2800), Plantation, Florida, USA Dec 23, 2008 Bottle, black pour. Great aroma here. Thick with chocolate, molasses, scotch, sherry. Flavor is rich and sweet. Vanilla, chocolate, scotch and toasted wood. One of my favorite brewdogs to date.
