KyotoLefty (1371), Kyoto, Japan Jan 16, 2009 Bottle. Opaque, shiny black with a thin, rather disappointing head. Aroma of burnt wood, smoke, coffee, vanilla. Strong flavor of roasted malts, coffee, alcohol heat, chocolate. Rich and somewhat complex, with bitter, burnt, dry finish. Body not enough to match the flavor-somewhat watery. Nice, tasty, bitter stout, but not the best package altogether.
tarjei (1741), Bryne, Norway Jan 14, 2009 33 cl bottle. Black color, moderate beige/tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, hops and hints of liqorice. Flavor is smotth roasted malt, coffee, chocolate. Dry finish. A very nice beer. Capa (952), Yokosuka, Japan Jan 13, 2009 Nearly black body with the fiantest head I’ve seen lately. Roasted malts, chocolate, overripe dark fruit, light vanilla, and slight smoked sausage in the aroma. The body wants to be thick and creamy, but comes off a bit watery. Tastes of bittersweet chocolate, roasted malt, some plum, black coffee, and burnt sugar. A decent stout BUt I have to say I was mildly disappointed. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jan 10, 2009 Just OK stout from this brewery which makes some great barrel aged stuff. The stout is quaffable, its not offensive, but there is no complexity, nor bold flavours. With so many good double stouts out there, why waste your bucks on this premium priced import. A bit above average mouthfeel and black colour with a moderate head. duganc (1), , New Jersey, USA does not count Jan 10, 2009 Bomber. Smokey malty aroma with slight caramel. Pours with a thin tan head that dissipates quickly. Palate is medium body, creamy, soft carbonation, bitter. Decent flavor with chocolate, candy and burnt smoke. Slightly weaker brother of Wyerbacher’s Old Heathen jrob21 (1250), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jan 8, 2009 Nice and smooth impy stout but lacking some of the complexity of some of the big guns. Aroma is mostly bittersweet chocolate with a tinge of plum. Flavor is roasted malt, coffee, chocolate. Relatively quick on the finish and an almost too hopped bitterness. Creamy texture is nice. Madsnp (607), Odense C, Denmark Jan 6, 2009 Bottle. Black coloured with a nice light brown lacing head. Aromas of roasted malts, hops, chocolate and caramel. Flavour of coffee, dark fruit, sweet malts, licorice and bitter hops. Beerlando (2283), Orlando, Florida, USA Jan 5, 2009 Pours a dark chestnut brown color with some crimson glowing at the edges. A small, frothy tan head leaves a soapy wash on the glass, scant spots remaining behind in dry form. Aromas include moderately toasted caramel, dark chocolate, sweet dark fruits, and hints of smokiness. Flavors are very similar, mostly caramello showing up front, with notes of figs and other dark fruits lending further sweetness. There is a roasty smokiness that comes through on the back end, lending balance and depth. Thin on body for the style, yet still relatively syrupy, the mouthfeel is lacking. Not bad overall, but this brew was definitely made for the Scotch barrel.
