Doggythedog (1541), Split, Croatia Oct 19, 2009 Poured a black body with a small white tan/gray head. Light chocolatey nose, malty notes. Sweet, soft taste, coffee mostly, roasty, clashing with a strong hop bitterness found in the end and going long into the aftertaste. Alcohol very well hidden. Not too complex but nice. hayduke (1619), Eureka, California, USA Oct 19, 2009 From a 750 ml bottle this poured a very dark garnet red that looked nearly black in the glass and raised a big tan head and left fat tan lacing rings behind as it slowly settled. Very attractive. The nose is roasted malts with chocolate, mild coffee, and some ripe fruit. Very rich and smooth mouthfeel is a delight on the tongue. The flavor is heavy on the roasted chocolate malts and there is some floral hop bitterness. Bitter finish. A very well crafted beer that is remarkably easy to drink. Good to the last drop. donfardz64 (406), Wellington, New Zealand Oct 18, 2009 Pours black, tan head. Aroma very roasty. Huge robust roast malt flavour, big bitterness. Hops are there a wee bit. It okay. malrubius (969), Valley Stream, New York, USA Oct 17, 2009 22 ounce bottle in snifter. Dark dark brown with brown ring and lace. Chocolate molasses dark fruit earth wood ash aroma. Chocolate fruit wood vanilla cinnamon pine forest soy with mildly roasted bitter finish. Medium body. Complex but not necessarily rich. Pretty decent. MikeKeller (38), Finland Oct 17, 2009 Bottle. Black beer with very little head. Rich aroma of alcoholic maltiness and some chocolate. Flavour is roasted or burned malts, some licourice and something a bit like coal. Nice firm body. Overall not nicely balanced like Traquair Jacobite Ale. caresville (106), Vernon, New Jersey, USA Oct 14, 2009 split with fsbw21086. beer pours jet black with almost no head what so ever. aroma of dark chocolate, heavy malts, licorice and coffee. tastes quite similar to the smell, mostly like whoppers. real nice. wheresthepath (523), Buckinghamshire, England Oct 11, 2009 [330ml bottle, gift from my wife] Batch 331. Pours jet black with a thin tan head. Odd sour liquorice aroma. Fizz is a slight intriguing tingle that gradually spreads to coat your mouth. Taste is as complex as you’d expect from a ’Dog brew - burnt malt, then liquorice, then something tantalisingly sweet for a moment before the bitterness of the burnt malt shoos it out the door... then plums, then... ooh, chocolate, then blackcurrant, then freshly laid tarmac, then that dratted burnt malt again. In fact, it’s the bitter burnt malt (and it really is just burnt/charcoal flavour, there’s no nice smokiness or anything) that really stays with you afterwards, right through subsequent meals, wine, coffee, hot chocolate and a good toothbrushing. Got hacked off with it to be quite honest. Which is annoying, because if it had been toned down, this was an intriguing, complex beer that I’d have loved to have enjoyed. Instead, it’s prossibly my least favourite Brewdog so far. marcus (1821), Sacramento, California, USA Oct 10, 2009 This opaque nearly black stout poured with a thin layer of beige colored bubbles and a fruity malt aroma. The flavor is chocolate and plum with a treacle chaser and, yes, a little coffee. It’s very tasty. I used half a bottle to make a batch of beef and beer, and it was delicious.
