ChainGangGuy (2523), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Jul 20, 2009 Appearance: Rolls out a dark brown, near black body with a smallish, bubbly, beige head.
Smell: Roasted malts with hints of unsweetened chocolate, licorice candies, coffee, and an all-around earthiness. Rich, vinous fruitiness present. Minor blip of higher alcohols. With some slight warming, the coffee notes deepen to give a touch of Kahlua.
Taste: Dark, roasty malts with flavors of baker’s chocolate and espresso with a more restrained fruitiness. An earthy roastiness pairs with the lightly herbaceous hops to provide a moderate amount of bitterness. As with the nose, a bit of added warmth helps to bring out more of the chocolate and coffee tones. A bit chalky and a touch of alcohol warmth on the roasty, bitter finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: Leans towards being relatively mild and easy-going as opposed to other stouts that are bold and brash. 3Faveryrogue (80), Asslip, Illinois, USA Jul 19, 2009 1pt 6.4fl oz bottle. Batch 002? Best by 7/7/08 or 09? Thinking 09. Brown to black pour. Thin wimpy tan head. Smells of raisins, chocolate, coffee. Maybe some soy or licorice, but first 3 most dominant. Mouth is slick. Smooth, but medium-heavy and tad oily. Upfront chocolate and coffee. Good finishing hop bite with roast bitter. Citrus remains controlled, yet still an astringency. Dont think it’s the booze. Some woody smokiness showing up mid palate. Wonderful note, though elusive. Damn drinkable. Found this on sale. Would never pay over $8 for this bottle, and it seems that Brewdog brews carry a high pricetag. Damn tariffs and diesel! Good 1st impression, and hopefully not the last. Solid brew. Made my night. tturner (103), , Washington, USA Jul 18, 2009 initial flavors of subtle bittersweet chocolate and coffee. crisp light finish (for a stout). Citrusy hops lean toward astringent and metalic on the finish. doesn’t overpower food. flutetokill (515), Fresno, California, USA Jul 18, 2009 Opaque black color. Light roasty aroma. Not much flavor. Very bitter ash aftertaste. Thin, watery feel. Maybe I got a bad bottle. Definitely not my favorite. SorenE (110), , New Zealand Jul 17, 2009 coke colored, small loose tan head. sweet malt and milk chocolate on the nose. The same flaovurs with a bit more roastiness and a lingering medium-low bitterness. not bad, not great. zapprentice (309), East Setauket, New York, USA Jul 15, 2009 Aroma interesting, smokey notes with dark chocolate, some coffee and possibly some oak. Taste is similar but has a watery beginning to me which I did not enjoy. Not bad overall. matt7215 (942), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Jul 14, 2009 330 ml bottle from a trade with hobbersr. best before 22/11/08. pours thin black with a tan head. aromas of tamed roasted malt. flavours of chocolate, coffee, and salt and hops. unique and enjoyable. id love to try an unfiltered one. thx riley. LilBeerDoctor (1480), East Setauket, New York, USA Jul 12, 2009 Bottle. Pours an opaque black with a very small light tan head. Aroma of raisin, roasted malt, burnt malt, chocolate, roasted nuts. Flavor of sweet and roasted malt up front with a sweet finish. Aroma is nice and complex but the flavor/palate doesn’t match up. Just kind of dull to me.
