A small, frothy tan head leaves a soapy wash on the glass, scant spots remaining behind in dry form. Aromas include moderately toasted caramel, dark chocolate, sweet dark fruits, and hints of smokiness. Flavors are very similar, mostly caramello showing up front, with notes of figs and other dark fruits lending further sweetness. There is a roasty smokiness that comes through on the back end, lending balance and depth. Thin on body for the style, yet still relatively syrupy, the mouthfeel is lacking. Not bad overall, but this brew was definitely made for the Scotch barrel. Sigmund (2300), Hafrsfjord, Norway

They are full of flavor and life, but not overly high on the alcohol. The packaging is simple and modest, yet stylish and intriguing enough to draw one in. I really like the plays on characteristics going on in this particular beer. The black raspberry aroma is paired so nicely with the flavor of dark chocolate-covered liquor-filled cherries. Other complexities layered on top of that include heavily caramelized and roasted maltiness along with a smoky finish that is slightly dry. The smokiness is really doing it for me. So is the near black liquid and attractive frothy beige moustache-forming beige head! This is a rich and creamy, full-bodied beer that is super good!

Sweetish aroma with soft roastedness, soya sauce, rum, smoke and flowery american hops. Malty flavor with soft roastedness, licorice, chocolate and firm bitterness. Fairly bitter and roasty towards finish. Low carbonation. This beer has lots of going on, perhaps too much and I feel that the beer needs a firmer backbone. blutt59 (2174), Dallas, Texas, USA
