The aroma contains some coffee, chocolate, and licorice. The flavor is rather bitter with some licorice, coffee, and chocolate. An odd gritty aftertaste. Overall a decent stout but not a great Impy. swoopjones (1919), Buffalo, New York, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 10, 2009 This opaque nearly black stout poured with a thin layer of beige colored bubbles and a fruity malt aroma. The flavor is chocolate and plum with a treacle chaser and, yes, a little coffee. It’s very tasty. I used half a bottle to make a batch of beef and beer, and it was delicious. emacgee (1892), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 15/20 | Sep 20, 2009 Pours a weak watery brown showing significant light on the pour and in the glass. Head is thin and tan, reluctant to form with coaxing and quick to dissipate. Nose starts with green apple skins, some mild molasses, sweet for sure, no roast, and mild chocolate. Flavor is papery, watery, has a mild grain astringency, bitter chocolate. Watery mouthfeel with some grain husk bite. Not good. nearbeer (1860), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 27, 2008 Updated: Jan 15, 2009650 ml, batch 004, bb 9-9-09. Nearly opaque with a two-finger head that settles to an enduring quarter-inch and leaves a frosty-soapy lacing behind. Earthy aromas of cocoa, coffee and peat with hints of caramel and marshmallow. Tastes of coffee, chicory, dark chocolate, smoked peat and oak with just enough vanilla-caramel and a hint of apple to balance all the bitter roast flavors. Medium-heavy body is neither too watery nor too syrupy. Creamy smooth with light carbonation and slightly dry. mgumby10 (1858), Jupiter, Florida, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 31, 2008 Pours a dark brown color, with a decent tan head. Smells of sharp caramel and chocolate, with hints of alcohol, and toffee notes. The flavor was much the same. Very sharp in its characters. The alcohol wasnt big, but tingled in a stinging way a bit. The chocolate and roasty flavors seem to stand out most. Not overly complex, but certainly solid. Crosling (1855), Loveland, Colorado, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Jan 31, 2009 Dark brown with ruby edges. Frothy, bubbly head of light tan cream. Malt accented nose lacks depth and describable character, with some medicinal character and some dark malt (cocoa and smoke.) Flavor is very stale and dull. Very poor balance, oxidized and tough to drink. I really wish Brewdog would consider a much beefier beer for their Paradox.
