Commercial Description:
What does it mean? Yes, what indeed does it all mean. Meaning of course is elusive and illusive. It can’t or shouldn’t be found on this bottle. Should it? Yet what if it was? Would you begin to look for pearls of wisdom or life direction on a beer label? Perhaps it’s been there all along. Since meaning is a mere illusion, perhaps we shouldn’t let it have any influence on our destiny. This particular beer refused to succumb to the illusion of meaning or allow capricious parameters to have any influence on its own fermented fate. Are we even asking the right question? Are you feeling frustrated in the emptiness? If so, that could be because someone got to this beer before you, and thus there’s a reason for that emptiness. It’s empty. And if so, perhaps there indeed is not any meaning for you here after all. Style over Substance, or Substance over the scriptures of Style? The latter, thank you very much. Twice.

Bottle from cgarvieuk, thanks Craig! Deep dark brown color, almost opague. Chocolate, blackcurrant and raisin in the aroma. Malty flavor with dark chocolate, twigs, raisin, figs and blackcurrant. Roastbitter aftertaste with tannines and dreid fruit. Good!

11.2 oz. bottle. Batch #352. Bottled on: 12/19/10 (but that can’t be right). A very deep mahogany pour with a thin mocha head. A pungent aroma of grapefruits and pine along with rich caramel, milk chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and alcohol, all of which become MUCH more pronounced, and actually dominate, as it warms up a bit. Solidly medium-bodied. Roasted malty flavors upfront with a good deal of coffee and some toffee. A touch earthy. Vanilla in the transition. Some bitter grapefruits at the tail end (though not as intense as I expected from the aroma). Drying finish. Some underlying alcohol throughout. Solid.

Dark brown color. Treacles, macadamian nuts, toffee, milk chocolate and candided apple nose. Rich dark chocolate on top of coffee cake and caramel mouth. Very nice malt backbone. Full bodied. Much more of a strong ale over an IPA. Well balanced. The coffee cake and dark chocolate linger in the finish. Superb.

Had a few of these and each one seems to taste different! A black double Belgian IPA? It’s black, tastes Belgian and has lots of hops. An awesome UK-US tag team and I hope there are more collaborations.

Mahogany with a tiny off white head. Sweet aroma with roasted malt and hints of hops. Sweet flavour with roasted malt, espresso, chocolate and hoppy notes.

Bouille dans le Monsieur Sammy, Merci bien! Pours a stout look, brown-black with tan head. Smells a tiny bit oddly plasticky, with some fruit and coffee. Taste replays aroma the coffee and fruit, with a notable hop dryness. Some lemon and grassy hop flavor. At least they are having fun, these dogs who are brewing.

Bottle from pp bottle shop. Pretty nondescript brew. I was hoping for more. Why even brew this beer. It took 2 breweries to come up with this? Like a hoppy, watered-down porter.

Bottle from Beverages4Less. Pours a very dark coppery brown with a multi-finger foamy tan head. Interesting aroma. Sort of like hamburger and sweat sox. Medium body with creamy carbonation. Flavor is dark malt, but still has a meat component. A little smokey. Finishes mildly smokey, somewhat hoppy. Very unusual. Very good.

Bottle (11.2oz). Batch 352. Pours black with deep ruby hues and an average size lasting frothy tan head. Interesting aroma: There’s fruity and piney hops, some sugary sweetness, lightly roasted malt, earthiness and lots of cocoa. The flavour is slightly sweet and a bit of an odd one: Lots of piney hops along with plenty of cocoa, some roasted malt and coffee and some Belgian yeast. Average bitter finish. Alcohol’s pretty well hidden. Medium bodied. Like I said, it’s an interesting and odd beer, like an IPA blended with a Porter. I can’t say it’s a 100% success but it’s pretty good.
