Cloudy orangeish body, and zero head. I was thoroughly prepared to hate the flavor, as I’m no fan of whiskey, let alone whiskey-flavored beer. But, surprise surprise, what saves the day here is the heavily smoked peat. Highly unusual, certainly not an IPA, but crazily it’s actually kind of enjoyable in a bizarre way. Not sure I’d ever buy it again, but way better than I was dreading.

| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Dec 11, 2009 Golden colored with little yellow head. Aroma is, well, nothing but whisky, with dry wood and fruity and peachy hops, still rather tangy aroma for me. Medium bodied. Flavor is even more whiskey with warming alcohol, some soft vanilla note comes up too. Aftertaste is still dominated by whisky, some toffee and exotic fruitiness with lemon too. Weird, and not necessarily very good. jgb9348 (2511), Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA
| 1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 2/10 | 2/5 | 2/10 | 1/5 | 3/20 | Dec 8, 2009 Clear orangish hued, muddy, golden coloured body with almost no head at all, and a few large bubbles near the top. Overpowering aroma as soon as the top is popped of oak, smoke, tobacco and meat. Not so great and way too strong - must be the whiskey barrels. Medium-bodied; STRONG oaky and pungent tobacco, musty, offensive flavours showing mushrooms, steak, potatoes and a lot of earth, mud, dirt and smoke too. Aftertaste just as bad - potent, strong, alcohol flavours roam through, with almost no respite in the beer. Overall, I’m a fan of stronger and harsher beers and also experimental brews, but this failed on all levels. Usually I’m a fan of the brewery, but no so on this occassion. Definitely pass this up if you see this and buy a different beer by them! I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Liquor Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 03-October-2009, sampled at home in Washington on 08-December-2009. BeerChaser0078 (362), Melbourne, Australia

I, like the previous rater, also thought that, despite the negative things I had heard, I would still like this beer. This was hubris. This smells like a strong peated scotch whisky, which I like, but it tasted like scotch and water that someone poured a small amount of lager into the night before. This I don’t like. | 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Nov 28, 2009 Wow I wasn’t sure whether I believed the terrible reviews but they are all bang on! In a word this is dreadful. The islay characters are dominant which is fine but the body is so light & carb so low that it literally is like drinking a glass of water with a bunch of ciggarette butts in it. I really like brewdog & their beers but this is ghastly. Maybe just maybe if it were a fresher bottle the carb would be higher & hops more prevalent, thus adding a touch of balance. Problem is this may well be a fresh-ish bottle. I don’t know what more to say & frankly am a bit embarrassd having it on my stores shelves.

Big whisky aroma. Golden coloured fruity and strong in alcohol with a slight medicinal taste. Some bitterness in a crisp full whisky finish. awiseman01 (366), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA
| 1.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 1/5 | 2/10 | 1/5 | 5/20 | Nov 15, 2009 Bottle from Binnys. To say this pours the color of thermaflu would be kind. To say this pours the color of vomit in toilet water minus the chunks would be accurate. As others have found, there is no head whatsoever...hands down most discouraging pour I’ve ever seen, and I’ve yet to even smell it. Nose is a very odd combination of sour wood dominating brisk hops and the undeniable smell of band aid material. The bottle says IPA’s and Islay casks shouldn’t go together, and I’m not yet convinced they do. Taste right away is rough and repulsive rotten wood, grass, dirt, musk, smoke and all around watery. The hops are there, but this odd combination brew tastes so odd you’d almost miss them. I understand what they were trying to do and if I were from Scottland it’s quite likely I’d enjoy this one. Heck, when you live in Scottland, it’s more than believable you’d like all of your beers to be cask aged, however, this one it a far prayer from working in America. Unfortunately for this brews reputation, I must rate as an American. madmitch76 (645), , Essex, England

Pours an nearly no head, white, diminishing. Cloudy orange-colored body. Hoppy aroma, somewhat citrusy, but more lime than grapefruit. Woody aroma, some earthiness and spice to it. Some fruit. Interesting aroma, not like anything I’ve tried, might be the Islay whiskey aging. Some dark fruit and spiciness. Spicy taste, strong smoke flavor, sweet. Sweet smoky aftertaste, somewhat ashy. Very flat tasting. Interesting combo of smoke and bitterness and fruitiness. I don’t like it too much.
