Commercial Description:
To celebrate the 375th anniversary of Maryland’s founding at St Mary’s City, Brewers Alley offers you a ’taste of the colony’ with our 1634 Ale. Crafted with molasses, malted rye and malted wheat, then adding caraway spice for flavor, we hope to evoke the rustic flavor of beer enjoyed by Lord Baltimore’s adventurers.

Mahogany appearance with a small beige head and light lacing. Malty, molassas infused aroma. Lightly spiced, moderately sweet taste with rye prominent in its grain bill. Medium bodied, decently carbonated mouthfeel. Durable finish that avoided becoming too cloying.

Poured a clear very dark copper color with a foamy tan head. There were some visible carbonation bubbles rising in the glass. The appearance of the beer was very nice. There was an earthyness to the aroma and some sweet roasted malt as well. The initial taste was dry and tart. There was a bit of sweetness and again a dry and tart finish that faded away rather uninspiringly. After reading the label and seeing how it looked in the glass I was expecting more on the taste side

12 oz. bottle. Pours a deep amber with a foamy off-white head. The head is pretty quick to disappear. The nose is sweet with notes of molasses, rye, wheat, and spice. Medium carbonation with a medium-light, slightly dry mouthfeel. Caramel, molasses, rye, and an ususual note that I assume is affected by the caraway on the palate. Medium-short finish with a little molasses hanging around. Malty yet light and dry. It isn’t too complex, but it is fairly enjoyable.

12oz bottle. Brown-amber color with a minimal, soapy head. Quite smooth and malty, with a decide Rye touch. A medium bodied session brown ale, some light balanced crispness mid-sip. Some mild caramel and toffee notes as well. Easy drinker, pretty good.

(Sample Date: 2/28/2009 Source:Other) Wheat, caraway, molasses, spicy rye and light fruitiness in aroma. Clear light brown. Dry with a cardboard spiciness. Caraway seeds come out in the flavor. Interesting beer.

I had this beer on draft at the brewery. The beer had a copper-red/dark amber color with a very small creamy white head that had minimal cling and retention. A roasty, malty, caramel aroma, with some grainy and earthy hops for balance. The beer is dominated by a sweet caramel flavor, with some sour grain effects too. It was a wetter beer and a bit creamy, but had a thinner body overall. Overall I was not too impressed by this beer, and think it is one of their lowest seasonals.

Draught at the brewpub. Rye beers usually interest me, so I was curious to try this. It pours a clear dark amber with almost no head. The aroma is caramel, rye, a touch of roast, some earth and yeast. The flavor is caramel, strong rye, Pepsi, herbs and some honey. The finish is extremely herbal and spicy with a very strong caraway quality (along with some background notes of Italian spices and sage). The rye is very overstated. It needs balanced some how, and how it is makes it quite bizarre.
