Commercial Description:
This style originated in the area of Cologne, Germany. It exhibits the more desirable features of both ales and lagers. Our Kolsch is pale gold with light body and a slightly dry palate. It has a mild bitterness and delicate hop aroma. This beer is a clean and pleasant thirst quencher, which earned a Bronze Medal at the 1998 Great American Beer Festival. 4.6 - 5.0% alcohol, by volume

Everything you want in a Kolsch: clean, quaffable, grassy. I like their use of hops here, giving a nice hoppy twang to finish.

On tap-Maryland Brewer’s Oktoberfest. Clear Golden color w/a slight white head. Sweet malt flavor w/a touch of grass flavor. Traces of hops, lemon, citrus, & fruit. Taste kind of wandered around; wasn’t too crazy @ this one. Seemed to lack a definite flavor or style.

Medium gold with a slight green tint. Malty, nutty-sweet aroma. Dry, slightly tart, strong first impression of malt biscuits or ceral. Medium bittering. Excellent balance, good rendering of one of my least favorite styles. Enjoyed on a sunny July evening on tap at the brewpub in Frederick.

Draught, at the brewpub, July 2006. Pale gold colour. Clean and fresh but with a touch of sweetness. Nothing too distinctive here, but a pretty decent brewpub Kolsch. Certainly better than plenty of others I tried on this trip.

On tap at the brewpub on 1/19/07: Pours a clear bright golden with a nicely-lacing frothy white head. Mild, lightly pale malty aroma has some fruity esters. Body starts fairly malty for the style with a good amount of European bittering hops. Nicely-balanced and very drinkable.

I really dig the kolsch at brewer’s alley. not too many pubs will wander into the kolsch zone where i live but these girls have the guts to do it and do it right. I’d like to try filling my fish tank with this stuff because i just know my tetras would freaking dig it as much as i do.

Draft at the brewpub, July 2006. A slightly hazy light yellow beer with only a rim of white head. The aroma is quite light, but very fresh with notes of citrus. The flavor is a bit too malty to begin with (for the style that is), but then the lemon comes along, and leads to a dry slightly wheat end. The mouthfeel is quite sparkling due to high carbonation. I’d like it more refreshing.

Another beer that I have had on draft at Brewer’s Alley on more than one occasion. A gold-amber beer with a light, lasting, white head. Moderate carbonation and a thin body. A decent sweet-malt aroma with hints of grassy hops. The flavor is moderately sweet, only very slightly bitter. Overall, a good easy-to-drink beer.
