popdoggy (100), USA Jan 13, 2008 Nice sweetness. I didnt get any warming sensation, and like most b.a. beers almost no head and soda mouthfeel. 2nd best of the night. Derek881 (489), Frederick, Maryland, USA Oct 27, 2007 Wow, this beer was the best I’ve had from Brewer’s Alley thus far. It was served in a tulip glass, had a smooth, dark copper-brown color and a very small, foamy white head that was quickly gone. The aroma was sweet and fruity with discernable tones of caramel, raisins, and maybe some pear; very malty and rich. The flavor was excellent; sweet and fruity, with great fruit tones and a caramel touch. There would be no way of knowing it featured 8.0% alcohol by the taste. Smooth and slightly creamy on the palate with only light carbonation. A wonderful beer that is an extreme bargain at only $3! CaptainCougar (5379), Rockville, Maryland, USA May 2, 2007 On tap at the brewpub on 1/19/07: Pours a transparent deep copper amber with a full-lacing, thin, but dense light tan head. Aroma of sweet caramely malt with a hint of peat and some light fruit. Body starts fairly full and sweet with nice caramel maltiness and a smooth, slightly warming finish. True to style and enjoyable. Braudog (3733), Dayton, Ohio, USA Jan 15, 2007 Updated: Jan 28, 2007Draft at the brewpub. Served in a tulip glass. This is pitch black with a thin trim of white. Very light licorice aroma. Once it’s finally tasted, this has a robust sugary essence, but in an extremely well-balanced way. Roasty, toasty and very sweet, this is an awesome beer for the winter months. (#2658, 1/15/07) LordHedgehog (144), Westminster, Maryland, USA Jan 19, 2004 Small firm head atop a beautiful amber ale. A little on the malty side for my tastes, slightly unbalanced. The alcohol is well-hidden, although it ends with a bitter dry mouth. Holdwine (905), Beertimore, Maryland, USA Dec 13, 2002 Nice Scotch Ale. Good floral notes up front. Pours well with a creamy head. Very malty with a surprisingly quick crisp finish. hopscotch (5440), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Nov 20, 2002 Updated: Feb 5, 2004This beer rocks!
The 2002 Scotch Ale just hit the taproom.
New brewmaster, big improvement over 2001.
The aroma is of sweet, dark and fuzzy fruits. Bursts of vanilla and caramel.
This sparkling clear, dark amber ale has a medium sized, off-white, creamy head. The head disappears quickly but leaves a decent lacing.
The flavor is sublime. Heavy, sweet malt with blasts of alcohol, roasted nuts, vanilla and caramel up front. Slightly pungent and very lightly bitter on the backside.
Full-bodied with an oily mouthfeel. Fizzy carbonation. Fairly short, but very enjoyable, dry finish. I love scotch ale and this 2002 batch is one of my favorites. It's worth a trip to Frederick from anywhere in the D.C./Baltimore area.
